PSP NGP!

Thu Jan 27, 2011 3:51 am

So the PSP NGP specs have been revealed but no price, date or proper name yet.
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/01/ngp.ars

Cortex A9 quad-core and SGX543MP4+ puts it way above current smartphones, which is nice to see. 5'' OLED screen is nice but not sure if it will still be "portable"?
Control scheme doesn't look bad, all the extra sensors are nice too. And the all-out connectivity can't hurt either. On the other hand, it won't come cheap.

is the SGX534 a dual core gfx chip? Or just a higher clocked/feature enhanced 530?

Anyway, I'd like to see battery life of that thing. It can't be great. I'm also not a huge fan of the "mobile gaming" stuff.

sadly ogl2 support means no folding :P .. .that might have been cool to have a handheld crunch 3k-5k points per day...

SGX 543MP does support OpenCL though.

Though I doubt you will be folding on it :)

It is a subtantially new chip with new shader engines and supports OpenCL and MP4 version has 4 cores. I would expect SGX543MP4 to vastly outperform Tegra 2 for example.

Yeah, it looks like this thing could even surpass Tegra3's expected performance.

Still, it's pretty enormous and there's no indication on pricing yet. If it were $500, I can't see it doing too well.

Yes, given the hardware (bleeding edge CPU/GPU, 3G, wifi, GPS, 5'' OLED, plenty of sensors, dual-cameras) I won't expect this to come cheap. PSP launched at around $249 if I remember correctly but this looks like it will be priced much higher. It will a lot cheaper than smartphones because while phones are sold at a healthy profit, in case of the PSP it might be sold at a loss. But $350+ seems almost certain?

I still love my PSP... plus the design for the NGP is a step backwards.

So....the official name for the NGP is the PlayStation Vita, and the price has been announced: $250 for the Wi-Fi version, and $300 for the 3G version. Nintendo is going to have to lower the price of the 3DS if they want to seriously compete with Sony. I can't imagine the 3DS ever becoming successful at this rate.

Chances are I'll pick up the Wi-Fi version, since I have no need or desire to play games on AT&T's 3G network, especially if it means having to sign up for a contract.
Heavy is good, heavy is reliable. If it doesn't work, you can always hit them with it.

Yeah this thing looks pretty sweet. Full PSP backwards compatibility, too, though of course it won't be playing UMD games.
