Halo 3 on PC versus xbox

Sun Jan 30, 2011 1:39 pm

This may be a real newb question, but is it possible for me to play my son on halo 3 with him on his xbox 360 and me on my pc? Can we do this over a shared wireless network? Do we both have to join xbox live to do this?

There is no PC version of Halo 3.

Really? Didn't know that. He has it for xbox--I just assumed Microsoft made it for PC as well. Is it possible to do what I asked with other versions of Halo?

The PC versions of Halo lack the coop functionality of the XBox versions.

Even if they did, the PC and XBox multiplayer functionality has always been seperated. KB+Mouse vs Gamepad generally results in segmentation.

The only one I'm aware of is Shadowrun. And even then I'm not sure if it's even still running.

From what I've heard, Live was originally supposed to connect PC users with Xbox users, but after a bunch of playtests they found that poor to average PC players could trounce decent to good xbox players pretty consistently because of superior controls, so they abandoned the whole idea.

I think last year's Lost Planet game allowed cross-platform coop... it might have been called Lost Planet 2.

Every game I've ever heard of that the developer experimented with cross platform multiplayer with PCs, they have always ditched it because the mouse is basically just like cheating when you are playing against consoles.

You mean that the console controller is like repeatedly smashing yourself in the face when you play on a console versus using a mouse?

I dunno, I have always found that a distinct lack of wrist movement is more comfortable in the long run. To me the gamepad is more comfortable for long sessions, at the cost of accuracy. So I have a wired Xbox 360 controller attached to my PC that I use with every game that supports gamepad input. I'd rather be able to play for extended periods when I have time than have to quit prematurely just because my wrist, forearm, and the back of my hand aches. And keep the masturbation jokes to yourselves (preemptively).

I don't seem to have that problem, and do much enjoy being able to actually hit my targets in fractions of a second :).

That seems to make sense. I can't seem to get used to the xbox controllers and was hoping I could have a crack at my son using my PC and mouse for aiming.

I am starting back up on Batman: AA for PC and I plan on using the xbox controller for it. It just works better here.

Well good for you. Some people have undiagnosed RSI's. Enjoy your fully-functional limbs while you still have them. :) Your anecdote doesn't nullify someone else's making it untrue.

njenabnit - I got it during a sale last fall yeah, it really plays great that way.

I apologize and mean no disrespect or to make fun of someone else's condition- it was a quick response :). I understand that a controller may be much more usable and comfortable!

And if you're playing single-player that's fine... the trouble is, if you're playing against PC users, chances are you'll never get to the "long run" because you'll keep getting shot :D

In first person games, the advantage of the mouse over the gamepad is just too much to make for a fair game.

As for hand/wrist issues, have you ever tried using a trackball instead of a mouse? Some people also find that ramping up the sensitivity of the mouse (thus requiring less wrist movement) helps.

Using a mouse pad with a gel wrist support can help, too.

Yes, but it's for a Co-op campaign. There is no competitive multiplayer.

I've had two where i've broken out in hives. I'm using a bean-filled one from IMAK, which I really like.

We'll just have to wait for them to finish turning, and then we can all move on!

/jokes aside, I think this will be good for the community. Yay Valve re-inventing how gaming is gamed! I predict nex-gen consoles will ship with Steam by default :).

I'm probably going to get the PS3 version since they are going to let you link your PSN ID with your Steam account and get the steam version unlocked with the PS3 version. I'll get to slow turn AND fast turn!
