Overheating Problems

Sat Feb 05, 2011 12:57 pm

I'm hoping that someone can help me with overheating problems I've been having. My computer specs are below. What's happening is I'm seeing graphics corruption in games, like flashing textures and strange colors, and also random lockups or crashes. This usually happens when the game has been on for a while which made me think it's a heat issue. I replaced two fans in my PC case that the bearings had gone bad on, but this hasn't helped. I'm wondering what is actually overheating, and what exactly I can do about it. I've been running CPUID to monitor temperatures and these are the temps I get while playing games: CPU Temp 100C (211F), GPU temp 88C (190F). Any help would be much appreciated.

Processor: Core i7 920 (stock cooler)
Graphics: GeForce GTX 260
Memory: 4GB RAM
Motherboard: Gigabyte EX58-UD3R
Case: Antek

The graphics card would be my #1 suspect.

It does sound like a graphics card from what you describe, but man those temperatures are too high for the CPU too. Clean out that case, remount the heatsink err something man! Don't wanna ruin anything.

I get that in my 9800 GTX OC card when I have it running for more than 12 hours or so. Yes it is an overheating problem so first then to check is making sure the fan on the card is running and not blocked with dust bunnies. If the card is clean and it is still doing that, then depending on how long you have to have the game on with effect whether or not it is an issue. If it is doing it in minutes then you prob need to replace the card.

I have already tried cleaning out the case, and remounting the heatsink on the processor, and reapplying thermal paste. Just far out of normal are the CPU and GPU temps though? I really don't know what they should be under heavy load. Also, if I need a new heatsink for my CPU, what's a good one? I'm not going for overclocking or anything, just cool and quiet operation.

The GPU temp isn't all that bad. A lot of GPUs can get that high under load. I do suggest trying to clean out the video card heatsink though. Pick up a can of compressed air for that. For the CPU however; I'd say a "normal" idle temp for an i7 920 would be something between 35-40 C. Load temps can get pretty high though. I wouldn't worry about anything 75 C or less.

As fa as a cooler goes...

Cool and quiet.

I have a core i7-930 running with a corsair a70 cooler, idle temps are always ~25 and load never goes above 50. Your processor should never get that hot... ever... Intel actually recommends that processor to not go about 67.9 degrees. Are you reapplying thermal paste when you reseat the heatsink? How are you removing the old thermal paste? Have you ran your computer without the side of the case on? Is the CPU fan plugged in? How loud is your system? What case do you have specifically?

If you know anyone that is more experienced than you with computers you should definitely have them check it out because 100C will fry that processor.

I have to join the "it is graphics card" chorus. I had a similar issue with my old 5870 I had to replace it as I noticed it was leaking oily substance from the fan. Rather than concenrating on your case air flow I would look into the graphics card itself. Run furMark GPU stress test - download furMark. Also try to set manual fan control on your card if it is available

You sure michael? I mean his CPU is running at 100C while his GPU is still running within an appropriate GPU range.

Case airflow is the issue here. Make sure the fans are pointed in the right directions to create airflow through the case.
