Monitor Disaster! - Looking for a replacement

Tue Feb 08, 2011 6:02 pm

So this past weekend I had an accident. My Dell 2407WFP-HC was bumped off a table and hit the corner on the way down, breaking the entire screen. Oh well, it was awesome while it lasted :p

I have not been up to date with monitor tech the past few years, so I could use some advice on a replacement. I used my monitor primarily with my Xbox 360 and desktop PC. I would like to have as many connectors on the back as possible (component, HDMI, USB, etc.) and speakers are not needed.

I want to stick with the same size, 24 inches, and keep the same resolution, 1920x1200, but it looks like most 24 inchers today are only 1920x1080. I am open to going up/down though.

Would a highly rated TN panel like this be a good option or would it be better to shell out almost double the money for another Dell, the Ultrasharp U2410.

Thanks!

That'll be your real question really.

Recent/good TN panels nowadays have pretty good color reproduction, but the black level is usually average at best, and the viewing angles are crap (note: I do have a TN panel, not bashing here). If you're mostly gaming and doing light desktop work, you can probably get away with one of the best-rated TN panels, if you're the only person standing in front of it.

If you do some photo/video work (where color accuracy is more important), or usually play with 2+ people (where the viewing angles matter), you'll want to go IPS. Or if you simply can, of course.

I would highly recommend you stick with a similar caliber monitor to the one you're replacing and get the U2410. Going with any of the TN options will give you a drop in image quality from your previous model, in addition you'll be losing resolution. There's also all the other bits you're getting with the Dell besides superior image quality and connection options. Consider that most cheaper monitors have lower quality stands that don't provide height adjustment or rotation, also the Dell has a USB hub and SD card reader.

I have a new 27" HP monitor at my desk that has a TN panel. It's a good TN panel, but the viewing angle on it is horrendous compared to my Dell 2407-HC. If I'm sitting directly in front of the monitor there is a visible gradient towards the corners of the screen, and it's unusable if I am not sitting straight in front, for example, if I'm leaning on my arm or slouching in my chair. IMOSHO, it's worth it to get another IPS panel.

The LED backlight LCDs have much blacker blacks.

LED backlights are mostly edge-lit, so their only advantage over fluorescent lighting is energy savings and longevity.

Don't downgrade to a nasty TN LCD panel. The UltraSharp U2410 is an equal replacement to the high quality monitor that you had. If you're patient, you'll find it on sale for under $500.

Here is a good site for monitor reviews, worth a read if your shelling out some benjamins.

The ZR24w is an awesome Computer monitor, but it lacks true 1:1 scaling so i wouldn't reccomend it for use with a gaming console.

Wow, thanks for the replies!

I have one reservation. It looks like the U2410 came out over a year ago. I do not know much about monitor refresh cycles, but it appears that the "U2411" may be on the way...or not :)
