DigiTimes says Intel plans to show off its 22-nm Ivy Bridge processors at the Computex trade show, which will kick off on May 31.

Doesn't this mean we'll be seeing Ivy Bridge in the wild around 2012? Is this an especially quick follow up? Seems instead of tick, tock, tick, tock; it has become tick, tock, ti..ock.

This one is slightly fast, but not obscenely though. We're coming up on a year since the last high-end server chips were released by Intel. So by the time the Ivy Bridge actually releases, we'll be hovering around the 18-month mark. The largest "problem" with their tick-tock method at this point is that it hasn't turned into the pure new architecture/die-shrink originally envisioned. Only some product lines get the die-shrink, others the architecture change. So we end up with chips being sold that use older tech, both in the high and low ends.

Just seems like things are moving fast because they're constantly bringing new things in place, but each CPU lasts in the market about as long as they did originally.

On dogs, ticks are often found on 'tocks, but they're not very fast.

Are you sure about 18 months? Because so far it's been scheduled for the first quarter/half of next year.

It'll be interesting to see what develops between Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge E. I would especially like to see whether or not LGA 1356 will materialize.

Yep, and Intel's last server chips were launched in March/April 2010. Sounds like 18 months to me.

Ivy Bridge is the die shrink of Sandy Bridge, not the server variant.

True, but the only information I've been able to find about Sandy Bridge "server" chips are the 1-way variants that use the same LGA1155 socket as the desktop parts. Best I've been able to find on the 2-way and 4-way chips is that they'll probably be launching Q4 2011. No info on whether those will be based on Sandy as it exists today, or if they'll be run on 22nm ala Ivy.

I believe the server chips will be covered mostly by SB E LGA 2011 later this year, along with the enthusiast/extreme market. Though the latter could get LGA 1356.

Which would still leave the Ivy Bridge debut for early next year for the mainstream market.
