Found a Gateway NV5922 machine with a Core i3 370M and Mobility Radeon 5650 for only $499.
Other specs: 15.6'' machine with 4GB RAM and Win7 HP 64-bit.
A rep let me play with one. Keyboard and touchpad are crap as expected but I did confirm the specs in device manager. Actually the CPU according to device manager was 380M and not 370M as listed. Even the box said 370M so thats a bonus

Some more details:
Battery is 48Wh and graphics are not switchable. So expect poor battery life (say slightly above 2 hours).

I won't expect to have a decent laptop at $499. I checked the link, it is $549.

It was $499 back then on a special. Thus in the hot deals section.

In this case, I would pick "gaming" and "$549"
The mobility radeon 5650 should allow around 720p gaming with medium setting on most games.
