opinons on plasma vs led

Mon Feb 21, 2011 10:25 am

So my 42" Sony Grand Wega has bit the dust after 5 years, so looking at a replacement unit.
My TV room is completely windowless, and the TV is about 13-15 feet from the viewing couch.
I watch mainly broadcast HD shows, some sports.. kids play Wii.. I'll probably pick up a BR player at some point.

My questions:

Are LED TV's really worth the extra cost?
Is there a "sweet-spot" for size? ( was thinking a 55"-60" unit)
Is 120Hz/240Hz worth it?
Worth getting extended warranty? Are there really user-servicable parts?

Thanks in advance for any opinions and advice :)

1/ Just to be clear, the "LED TV's" are just an LCD TV that is either Edgelit or backlit by LED's instead of CCFL's. The pixels themselves aren't individual LED's.
2/ The sweetspot for size is basically determined by your budget and your viewing distance. The rule of thumb is that the largest you can comfortably go is a ratio of VD = 1.5 * SD where SD = screen diagonal and VD is viewing distance. Sitting 8' away would mean the largest TV you should look at would be about 64".
3/ 120/240hz. Make sure to get a TV that supports native 24p content and a BD player that supports 24p output. That's a bigger deal for movies than a 120/240/480hz TV.

EDIT: By the way, in your situation I would certainly go with a Plasma. Panasonic's units are top-notch. The VT line is the cream-of-the-crop.

LCDs with LED backlights use less power and last longer than LCDs with fluorescent backlights, but the CCFLs may provide a wider color gamut.

An LED backlight array with local dimming can provide superior contrast, but those sets are not very common and they are rather expensive.

$3600 from Sony. Is it 2¼ times as good as one with fewer features?

I second the panasonic plasma. The picture is incredible and they do very well with non-native resolutions, almost like a crt.

normally I would recommend you get a 50" panasonic plasma but....
check LED prices, if you can get a 46" or larger in ur budget, the LED might look much brighter and u may be happier

I think there's not much difference between the high end LCD / plasmas these days, the main reason I would choose plasma is its better with fast moving images and black levels. The main reason I would choose LCD is because they don't get the same amount of glare that can reflect from the glass on a plasma, thinner and lighter form factor.

I think the image quality is high enough that most are 'good enough' these days, and if you want to get picky its more about +/-'s of particular models than purely being about plasma or lcd.

Something like this;

Put simply:

Dark room -> Plasma
Not dark room -> LCD
Light gaming -> either
Real gaming -> Plasma

I have a Vizio vf551xvt with local dimming and it's great. Reviewers think so too. And this set is a couple years old now.

Plasma is better, but if you're sensitive to the visual artifacts that go with them then it's not an option.
