GPU: $361 purchased 12/28 with free shipping. Two months later, it's $19 more than I paid.
CPU: $330 purchased 1/9 and also shipped free.

It's been more than 10 years since I spent that much on a CPU. Most recently, I paid $166 for the Phenom II X4 955 Black, $145 for the Phenom II X3 720 Black and $265 for the Core2Quad Q9300.

GPU: $369 at the Egg
CPU: $169 at Microcenter

CPU soon to be replaced, $279 at Microcenter- GPU still wins (especially when I add a second!).

My GPU was marginally more expensive--like 20 bucks? I'm not running a real high resolution monitor so GPU isn't a huge deal for me currently (which is kind of nice).

my GPU purchases have been marginally more expensive than corresponding CPU's so 50%-50%

On the other hand, another thing I've done a few times has been purchasing different GPUs for the same system, so the actual lifetime GPU expenditure definitely outweighs CPU purchases.

I spend more time on the computer doing random non-3D related activities than I do for 3D, but when I do anything 3D, it is usually at least somewhat intensive so I would say that close to 50/50 has been and would be (in the future) ideal for me. My last build was a Phenom II X4 955 with a Radeon 5770 1gb; about $180 and $160, respectively.

In 3D demands, aside from games, I work with high polygon (though with almost no shaders) scenes frequently.

Anticipating $200ish for the CPU and the same for the GPU on the next build. Maybe a bit higher for the GPU, but not much. The last build was definitely weighted on the GPU side though: $120 for an E7300 vs. $170 for a 4850.

I spent more than 2x on my current GPU as opposed to the CPU, and to add insult to injury the CPU is just about to come up on its second birthday. Not to mention the motherboard cost more than the CPU as well. Then again, the CPU is a Phenom II X2 BE that unlocked the 2 extra cores. I don't even turn up the multiplier from the default 15.5 (3.1GHz).

edit, just points of data:

CPU - 21 months ago - $89
GPU - 2-3 weeks ago - $210

I've been through 2 GPUs in this build but just the one CPU, so overall the GPUs were more expensive; something like $250 total for them, and ~$180 for the CPU.

CPU: E8400 @ ~$180

GPU 1: 8800GT @ ~$200
GPU 2: HD4890 @ $220

So while I hover around the price/performance mark, I did upgrade the GPU on my build, so I've invested over twice as much in it.

If I bought now, which I can't, due to the mobo thing :( :

Core i7-2600K: $329.99 @ Newegg
2x GTX 560 Ti: $489.98 @ Newegg

So about a 48.5% increase in cost for the GPU. (For what it's worth I don't usually like dual-GPU but 2 560s beat the pants off the 580 for the same price)

Athlon II x2 560 BE + MSI 880gx board - $60 after rebate (thanks microcenter!)
Gigabyte GeForce 460GTX 768GB - $135 after rebate.

Since the CPU unlocked stably to an x4 also, I think I got an AWESOME deal. Both of the rebates showed up quickly as well.

I'm kinda interested in what inspires the question. Why does it matter? And there are some caveats to the question. First, the question assumes you're buying both at the same time - at least I feel there's that implication. Also, what if your CPU outlasts your GPU (which is probably not uncommon) - do you then figure up the totals? I know it's really hard to cover all the bases with these poll questions, but this one seems particularly fraught with blind spots :( Not trying to be a prick...

Although I bought them at different times -- I tend to stagger my purchases for my desktop -- I'm pretty sure I spent about the same $200 on GTX 260 (factory OC) as I did on the Phenom II x6 1050T

I assume to see what the ever-so-informed readers here at TR think is a good balance for a desktop. At least that's what my gut is telling me. ;) What about you Flip? How much did you spend on your CPU and GPU?

Although I'm currently using the IGP (Radeon 4200), I'm thinking to pair a Radeon 5770 ($100 after rebates) with my Athlon II X4 640 ($99), so about par pricewise.

However, this is for a general purpose desktop (office, photoshop, netflix/media, handbrake) with only very light gaming duties (Oblivion, Fallout, L4D).

For a gaming box, I usually want to spend about 50% more on the GPU than the CPU. Or conversely, I like to spend about 33-40% less on the CPU than the GPU.
