TR BBQ ~VIII~ Official Thread

Mon Dec 27, 2010 2:42 pm

Hell, it's about time.

The Front Page wrote:
Clear your calendar and come to Holland, Michigan on August 6th for the eighth annual Tech Report BBQ! My mom has agreed to feed the geeks this year, so attendees are in for a treat! The premier athletic event is our traditional Baggo tournament where, unlike in years past, anyone has a chance to win!* The conversation and the people you'll have it with are top-notch, and you can count on them to supply some sweet deals at the inevitable hardware swap as well. Stay until dark, and we'll have a bonfire and obligatory smores on the beach.

All TR readers and their families are welcome!

Posting this now because I'm pretty sure of the dates already, either July 30th or August 6th.

TRBBQ VIII will be August 6th! Mark your calendars! :D

OMG we gots teh interwebs! We'll be Livestreaming the BBQ for the first time ever, it'll be almost like being there!* Start watching at http://www.livestream.com/sheldomaus around 11:00 or so. I'll have the webcam on my laptop doing the streaming so I can move it around occasionally.

* - not really, we're talking highly compressed ultra crappy steaming webcam footage here... You should still try to be there in person. Also, you'll miss the smells, the food, swimming, hardware swapping, etc... :P

BTW, here's a link to the official BBQ hardware swap thread.

Edit 6/1/11: Looking for a rough idea of total attendees; please post and let me know.
Edit 6/6/11: This post needs a picture! Here's one I took on Memorial Day at Tunnel Park - about a half mile south of the cottage:

Will this be in the war-torn Middle West like previous BBQs?

That's not far from the truth actually. :o We're having a lot of friends/family come see us the following two weeks. We've basically got the cottage for a whole month this year with the wedding and the BBQ right in the middle and we love the idea of actually being able to hang out with the people that made the trip for our wedding rather than barely seeing them at all on the day of and then flying out the next one. Our plan is to head somewhere tropical later in the year or first thing next year when its cold in Michigan.

wow.

Not sure how this is going to go over, but it looks like I will be unable to attend the BBQ this year. I do hope it doesn't impact the event as there really isn't anything I can do about it. I do apologize to everyone as I know a number of you really look forward to it and the food.

For the record I am not kidding about this.

I know its a big deal to you to miss it, so I hope all is well with you. Just take care of whatever you have to, and don't worry about the this stuff.

That's a pretty big bummer z-man but not to worry, we will thrive even without your awesome cooking skills. I will miss hanging out around the coals at 6AM though. ;)

I'll make some other accommodations for food, maybe tell my mom that cooking for the BBQ can be her wedding gift to me. :D

I know is still a bit early but can I start to get a rough idea of how many to expect? Any ideas for anything the we should do differently this time around?

I have an interest in a chicago themed restaurant, wouldn't be too big of a deal to provide gyro, italian beef, and chicago dogs...though, it wouldn't really be a bbq then, not to mention idachaffe can go anywhere and get that.

My mom has agreed to make ribs! :D Of course I have to buy them but the important thing is that she'll cook 'em! 8) Bring some wet-naps though, they're a bit of a different breed than z-man's. ;)

Burgers and hot dogs are pretty easy to supply, as well as corn on the cob - I'll handle all those too. We just need soda, WATER, misc chips, veggies, BAKED BEANS, cookies, etc... We should be ok.

What kind of interest are you talking about, jss? I'd be up for a mixed themed deal...

And what is that supposed to mean? Really I am not a fan of super wet ribs in the sense of some cooks rely on the sauce to make them. Good BBQ should always be about the meat and how well it is cooked. BBQ sauce is just icing on the cake.

They hardly rely on the sauce, they are very well cooked - it's a complimentary thing (sauce is homemade) - they are a lot messier than yours though as the quantity of the sauce is significantly greater - hence the need for wet naps. *yum*

I would agree that your ribs definitely emphasize the meat more (lots of effort preparing it) while hers are like a 50/50 split but it's not detrimental. I have a foot firmly in both camps. :)

What?

Wish we could organize a BBQ further south. I'm not really in a position to do that though, or I would.

I would like to see a list of what Dpos is selling before making any sort of commitment.

Actually as is the case these last few years, family obligations make any sort of real commitment impossible. Put me down as a distant maybe.
