High Resolution Laptop

Tue Mar 08, 2011 3:01 pm

I'm looking to get a new laptop, and the thing that's most important to me is the resolution. I'd like 1920x1200 if I can get it, though 1920x1080 could be acceptable. Beyond that, I'm just looking for something basic for internet browsing and WoW. Bonus if it has a Trackpoint-style pointer. Any ideas?

As of the refresh of the Alienware M17x this spring there are no laptops that offer 1920x1200 anymore. :(

Plenty of 1920x1080 out there though, usually in the 17" range.

Edit: Well, Glorious search found one from HP, but not sure I'd call a Core 2 Duo a reasonable purchase at this point in time. So I stand by my statement for now.

I hope you don't have a super-tight budget, or ultra-portability in mind.

NewEgg PowerSearch is your friend.

WRT trackpoint-equipped machines with that resolution, your Lenovo choices would seem to be the (rather pricey) W510 "mobile workstation," or the T510 with the optional 1920x1080 screen upgrade.
I don't know if there are any non-Lenovo 1080p machines out there with a nub.

Besides the Lenovo options the only other one I know of is the HP Elitebook 8740w. That's a 17" unit and currently the model hasn't been updated to the Sandy Bridge processors, but it has both a 1920x1080 and a "pointstick" as HP calls it.

Hm. Well I guess the other part I didn't mention is that I don't want something huge. 17" is pushing it for me, 15 is better, smaller is even better. I know it's possible somewhere to find smaller laptops with high resolution, because people have (though it may require getting it from overseas).

The budget's not too tight - this is gonna be my main computer in the future, and I'm fine with spending a little more to get something that fits what I want, rather than spending less and getting something I'll end up rarely using.

The Sony Vaio Z had a 13" 1920*1080 panel, but they discontinued it so you'd have to get one from the Sony Outlet.
The Dell Studio 15 had a 15" 1920*1080 panel (I have one), but they discontinued it so you'd have to get one from the Dell Outlet.

If you are only looking for surfing the web than why not get a desktop, you'll easily get that resolution in a desktop

Dell Latitudes have the nub and 1920x1080 displays.

The 17" MacBook Pro is the only laptop that I know of with 1920x1200 screen resolution.

Bear in mind that Dell does not have as good a nub as the Thinkpads. I use a dell precision laptop for work and the nub is near-to useless compared to my personal thinkpad.

We could probably use you as a verb too, to describe your style of debate in the R&P forum. (As in, "looks like so-and-so just got Glorioused".)

And FWIW the thread necro was originally due to a spam post which has since been deleted. (Should've probably left a placeholder post to explain the necro...)

I'm more impressed that I somehow attributed that search data to Glorious when it was UberGerbil who did the legwork.

I'm going to blame PUI.
