Corsair PSU failures and RMAs

Fri Mar 11, 2011 12:16 pm

I purchased a Corsair HX750 from the Egg back in early February and unfortunately it popped something and died on me in early March. I was right on the cusp of the 30-day return window for exchange at NewEgg so I went ahead and got an RMA from Corsair and sent it in. So far I've been fairly pleased with Corsair's RMA process but I got an e-mail advising me they were experiencing heavy return volumes and to allow an additional 5 business days to process my return. I'm not real happy about that as I expected Corsair to ship me a replacement within 2-3 business days of receiving my defective PSU. At this point it looks like my main rig is going to be down for at least 3 weeks which is about a week longer than I hoped for.

Has anybody else had recent experience with Corsair's RMA process, especially with PSU's? I'm curious to know what others have experienced.

Luckily I haven't had to use the RMA service but I'm very disappointed in all the negative posts I've seen about the reliability. They used to make rock solid PSU's but then I guess they got too big and tried to do so much that quality went down hill. I hope they get their act together soon.

I haven't had any problems with the VX450W, but then I suspect that the CX430 would do the trick for what I need. I haven't tried it yet though because there aren't any noise level statistics on the Corsair site. I've been meaning to contact them about that.

I feel your pain. I had the same thing happen to me when I ordered a Corsair TX 750 from newegg about 3 years ago. Out of the box, it had sounded like a loose ball bearing that would get knocked in and out of place depending on the case sat. Finally, just last thanksgiving, I had to get it RMA-ed because it just became super loud. After sending it in, they stated the same thing, it then got to the very end of the 3 business weeks and I was about to call them. I get home after work that last day and I see a package. FINALLY. My main rig was also down for 3 weeks just as you had calculated (as did I). Good luck.

Thanks to every one that responded. My HX750 seemed to be running just fine. I was running both the SMP and GPU3 Folding@home clients on my system 24x5 and it had no noticeable issues right up until the moment it popped and died. I also have a Corsair TX650 in my backup rig that has been running fine for several months. So I'm not just disappointed my nearly-new HX750 died but Corsair's email update about "heavy return volume" or something to that effect got me wondering if my PSU dying wasn't part of the "normal" defects bucket.

Have several Corsair, namely the HX520 and AX750, and both are running fine. The AX750 is brand new for my Sandy Bridge rig, but the HX520 has been a champ. I wonder why they are suddenly having failures, is it their own manufacturing, or third party components that are shoddy. I mean, we all remember the caps bursting on motherboards a few years back and the same thing could easily happen on PSU I imagine.

I had a Corsair 650TX that was DOA. No brands are infallible.

I'm having real trouble finding the Corsair VX450W PSU with any of my suppliers, or any of the VX range for that matter. I'm in the UK, so it would have to be a non-110V PSU, but I'm just wondering if anyone else is seeing a similar shortage. The Corsair site still classes them (VX) as a current range.

For anyone interested in an update...

My blown HX750 was delivered to Corsair's RMA facility on 3/8.
It was checked into Corsair's returns system on 3/9.
I received my replacement yesterday, 3/21.

Nine business days to get my replacement PSU processed, shipped, and back in my hands. Not too bad and only one day more than what I expected. The pleasantly surprising thing about the whole experience is that Corsair shipped me a brand new in-the-retail-box PSU complete with cables, pouch for the cables, and velvet pouch for the PSU. In other words, it was the exact same package as I got from the Egg when I purchased my failed PSU. All I sent to them was the base PSU. I didn't send any of the power cables back because they weren't defective. Nicely done Corsair only now I have way more power cables for my PSU than I need.

good thing you didn't RMA an intel sandy bridge motherboard, I don't think you would have survived

RMA'd a 550vx and was offered a gs600 as an replacement.
I told them I didn't want it because the gs600 is only a three warranty.
They offered a tx650, it has a 5 year warranty so I took it.
It took about 2 weeks and didn't get a reply after they received it for 3-4 days, after that they sent it quickly.

I was told the 550VX is discontinued so maybe the 450VX is also discontinued.
You might still be able to find one at some stores.
