Need some help with Sandy-Bridge Build

Sun Mar 27, 2011 8:14 pm

Hello,
This is my first post on the Forum, so thanks for any help in advance.
My last build was in early 07.
I've settled on,
Intel Core i7-2600K
MSI N560GTX-TI Twin Frozr II/OC GeForce GTX 560 Ti
the rest is up in the air, but will be overclocking and
running SLI down the road.

Needs:
Mobo
Memory
1 or 2 HD?
cpu cooler?

Old system had a 3 1/2" floppy. Is that even needed anymore?

Using Existing:
Case
Cooler Master Stacker 830/831 Atx
Psu
Ultra X-Pro ULT40029 750-Watt Power Supply - ATX, Dual 80mm Fans
DVD Burner
LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner

Thanks to ya...

yo bro. welcome to the forums! i'm the resident cool guy.

Before we get into too much in the specifics dept. what kind of things will you be doing with this system? I assume that since you're going 560, you're looking to play some games.

What kind of budget? are you thinking of an SSD? right now there are some KILLER deals on some of AMD's gpu's, if you're an nvidia guy, fair enough, but today, i think am probably has a better bang for buck. If you're a physx or cuda guy, the 560 is a solid card. what kind of monitor(s) you planning on using? res?

some of that additional information will assist in finding you the best system.

For the Intel Core i5-2500K (or i7-2600K) Sandy Bridge processor, you'll want an LGA1155 motherboard with the Intel P67 chipset. NVidia's licensing requirements limit SLI support to the most expensive motherboards. The P8P67 Pro may be a good choice for your build.

2x4 GiB of PC3-12800 or PC3-10600 should be sufficient for most tasks.

A single SSD (0.080 to 0.160 TB) for your OS and most-used programs and a 1.0 to 2.2 TB 7200 rpm hard-drive for your larger things may be a good combination of performance and capacity. If your budget doesn't include $150-$250 for an SSD, be sure to get a good hard-drive (Samsung HD103SJ or Western Digital WD1002FAEX, for example). Consider an external docking bay like the Thermaltake BlacX USB3 with a 2 TB 5400 rpm drive for backups.

Take a look at the Corsair Hydro series of CPU coolers. If you're just looking for something better than Intel's stock cooler without spending a bunch of money, the CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ gets positive reviews.

I don't believe that there's any place for floppy diskette drives in a modern PC.

You didn't mention it, but you'll need to purchase Windows 7 (Home Premium 64-bit OEM for <$100) to make good use of your new gaming PC.

Any ideas..
Egg's out and so is Tigerdirect. Those are the only places I have purchased
parts from.

My recommendation for a HSF is the venerable Scythe Mugen 2 Rev. B:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835185142

I have installed, literally, dozens of these and they are excellent. Big, mind you, but my [email protected] only makes it into the low 60s(C) at full load in Prime95.

Not the easiest to install but it's $40 and comparable to any air cooler on the market...IMO.

Just remember to tape the backplate temporarily, during installation, to the back of the mobo and all will go smoothly.

Its been a few months , but I'm back on track. Thanks to eveyone who commented on my original post.

Purchased everything listed and threw in a Intel 320 SSD to boot. Plus a P8Z68-VPRO mobo(Thanks to the Tech Report Review), WD Caviar Black 1tb and 8gb of Corsair Vengeance mem.
I did use my old Psu and I'm starting to think that was a bad idea.
This is going to sound weird, but I get a high pitched sound from the case.
I have cleared the fans as being the cause and pulled the Gpu and run with the IGPU, no change.
It seems to only happen when the computer is at idle.
Is it the Psu and if so, does that mean its going out? What else could it be??
I appreciate your comments.

If it's a buzzy/whiney pissed-off mosquito sound, there's a fair chance it is your PSU. Often they start making that sound when heavily loaded, but the mechanism I'm thinking of also permits the appearance of noise at idle. The internals of the PSU turn current on and off quickly, and at a frequency that's load-dependent. Those current spikes actually cause certain parts inside the PSU to vibrate, and those vibrations are what you're hearing. It's not a sign of danger, but it is annoying as hell.

Replacing the PSU is up to you. Sometimes these things go away over time, sometimes not.

There's also a chance that the noise is coming from the VRU circuitry on the motherboard itself (they use a similar technique to regulate voltage). Replacing the PSU would do nothing to change that.
