8/16 bit Nes/pc emulators..

Sat Mar 26, 2011 3:05 pm

Hi guys,

I was wondering if anybody here could recommend a place to find an emulator and game downloads for NES titles and some old pc games such a's kings quest, leisure suit Larry, etc. I have been wanting to replace these old titles from when I was a kid and I never knew where to look. I've found lots of different websites but I was afraid to download anything from a source I was unfamiliar with. Let me know if you have any suggestions thanks!

I don't think I'd be allowed to give you links, but try searching for "abandonware" to find some older pc games.

Pretty much the emulators arent illegal, its the having of roms and software that you dont own that is illegal. Your free to dump the roms of any carts you own, but it is illegal to give them or sell to other peoples. You will not get any links to any rom site or software downloads as this kind of thing can get TR in trouble.

Thanks for the info. Definitly don't want to get anyone in trouble.

The various Quest series from Sierra are available as collections for the PC now. You can usually find them at a Gamestop that stocks PC games for about $5-$10.

You also have excellent quality fan made remakes that are available for free:

http://www.zophar.net has all the emulators you would ever need, but they don't host or link to rom downloads. For NES, Nestopia and FCEUltra are the best. ZSNES is the best SNES emulator, though there are a few others out there with good functionality.

As far as roms go, well, do some searching (I'm not about to link what basically amounts to a pirating website here). It's a pretty big gray area as to the legality of it. Getting stuff that wasn't ever released in your region is probably fine, but I would make an effort to acquire the actual carts of games that really are/were available in your region.

For old PC games, try http://www.gog.com.

Nestopia for NES emulation, and ZSNES or possibly bsnes for Super NES, assuming you're running Windows. bsnes is more accurate and hence probably has fewer emu bugs, but it's slower and the author's a bit eccentric WRT what a proper ROM image should look like.

Also, http://www.gog.com/ might have the old PC games you're looking for.

For playing old DOS games, Dosbox is your friend. There are a few really nice frontends for it, and I heartily recommend D-Fend Reloaded. Makes everything really easy.
