This morning I disassembled my old computer from 2001; a p3-800 with 256 MiB of RAM on an intel motherboard with integrated graphics. I had bought the computer from a white box shop at my college. Maybe those things were already common, but I didn't expect to see:

• toolless panels
• toolless slots
• semi-toolless 5.25" bays
• a removable 3.5" cage
• a removable motherboard tray

Was this usual back in the day, or was this case niftier than average

No, it wasn't that uncommon, I have several cases from that era with most of those features. The only cases that were really bad was the paper thin edge cutting cheap cases....still have a few scars from slicing the heck out of my hands on them...

Removable motherboard trays were one feature that went away. They were neat, but I think prefer the nicer mobo layouts of today over removable trays.
