I'm looking to overclock my AMD Phenom II X4 955

Hyper 212+ has shown to be a highly effective low-cost cooler. If you are going strictly for cooling this will get the job done well. Although personally I like the look of other coolers more.

It's definitely the most recommended cooler around here, and it's very hard to make a business case against, particularly if it's going into a case without a window where aesthetics should have no bearing (don't ask just how horrible the aesthetic matching is inside my P180...).

I have the Hyper 212+ on my i7 920. From the stock cooler hitting 60-93C at stock clocks to 44-63C AFTER OC'ing it to 3.5GHz, without adding a second fan (you can add a second one), I've got to recommend it.

While Zalmans look nice and work well, what are you going to do if you want (or need) to replace the fan on it? I vastly prefer HSFs that can accept standard form-factor fans.

Also, the 212+ has great mounting options and is THE bargain HSF of choice, if you case has the room for it.
It cools within a few degrees of units costing 2x, 3x, 4x. Just search for reviews.

although I got it on sale for 50 bucks and I have 1 scythe 800rpm s-flex fan on the cooler.

I think Zalman is horribly overrated. It's been a while but I had a CNPS 9500A, which was incredibly loud at moderate settings. I've never had a Zalman since then. OTOH, the Cooler Master is a pretty nice tower design, which is proven over and over again, and can take standard 120mm fans. That's what I'd go with now, hands down.

edit: Noctuas like the link in the post above me are widely regarded as being FREAKIN AWESOME and super quiet. Not sure I could convince myself to spend $80 on a heatsink, though.

Zalman's been on a pretty long streak of underwhelming products. Back in the Athlon 64 days they were a great option, especially for silence but that hasn't really been the case for some time. The Cooler Master Hyper 212+ is a great heatsink. I've purchased two for myself. Many of the heatsinks in that price range are very close in design and functionality. There's really not a ton to be gained going higher end on cooling in my opinion. The tower design has been nearly perfected, the fan you use matters more for silence than anything these days.

You and me both. Heck, some of my CPUs cost less than that, and I don't think I've ever spent more than around $40 for a heatsink!

Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme and a Scythe S-Flex SFF21F 120mm fan. A gentle hum/swish under the table/desk and life is good.
