Quietest decent-output video card?

Wed Apr 06, 2011 11:03 am

Hey guys, i was wondering if there was any consensus on the quietest video card that still offers reasonably good folding performance. I'm looking to set it up in my room where I sleep. Also, it'd be nice if it had HDMI support

That really depends on what sort of PPD you want, 'good performance' is subjective. I'm not much of a folder so I'm not certain, but I doubt there'd be one universally accepted quiet folding card.

Most video card reviews do have dB comparisons, so you could use that as a starting point. Make sure to take into account the distance at which the dB reading is taken though.

Oh, and your signature is full of win.

Well right now for folding you want nVidia. That may change in a few months with the AMD client due out. The 550 or the 560Ti would probably be your best bang/quietest solution. I personally would go with the 560Ti. Do you have a budget?

You know, boys, a nuclear reactor is a lot like a woman. You just have to read the manual and press the right buttons.

I have a Sapphire Radeon HD 5770 Vapor-X. It isn't the latest and greatest, but it is more than enough for some reasonable gaming at 1680x1050.

If you can hear it at four feet, I would be amazed. I don't run it too hard, but I don't hear much spool up when I am gaming.

I think Sapphire focuses on noise better than most other vendors, when it comes to their custom cooling solutions, vice the stock coolers.

Good luck.

My GT240 was the leader in that area around 2 years ago. As of last year it seems to be the GTS 450 (may be a bit louder). Now I would expect the 550 Ti to inherit that title, but I have not read about any tests on that yet.

This is the one I own, a Gigabyte GTS 450, which surprisingly still costs the same price it was listed for when I got it (but I got mine with a $14 discount) last October/November.

It produces in general around 9100-9300 Points Per Day, depending on the WU and what I'm doing, and every once in a great while somewhere ~15000 PPD (the Project 10928 it folded yesterday, for example, took 87 minutes 25 seconds and netted 15237 PPD), but those are quite rare and take quite a bit of CPU time, such that the -bigadv SMP WU I'm crunching at the same time slows enough that I end up gaining only a few PPD overall. The GPU is fairly quiet, but then I'm probably a bad judge because I've got 3 systems chugging away in close proximity, 2 of which also have GPU's folding.

The card isn't a great overclocker, since the shader and core speeds are linked at 2:1. I haven't overvolted to see how much that would help, however.

It probably does, but it will be a personal debate whether it is worth the $50 or so premium over a regular GTS 450 from a cost perspective.

I had a 4850 and I slapped a ARCTIC COOLING Accelero S1 Rev.2 cooler on it. Worked perfectly. I imagine you could do the same with a 6850 or other mid-range card.
