Re: Help me pick a racing game

I'd have to say Grid, Dirt2 and NFS Shift are my favourites. I've been in a huge racing game binge over the past 6 months and those are probably my favourite. Grid and DiRT 2 tend to be pretty similar, though, as they're made with pretty much the same engine; dirt 2 being more advanced though. NFS Shift though is a sim that can kick your ass, it feels closest to actually driving a car than any other game I've played yet.

As for wheels, I'm not a fan of them. Instead I simply use a wired Xbox 360 controller. Analogue triggers are a must, and given NFS, DIRT2 and GRID's console origins, they automatically detect them and work accordingly.

Also if for some reason you have a playstation 3, go get Gran tourismo 5. I've been playing the crap out of that and it's pretty damn good, at least untill my PS3 commit seppuku. Just you need to remember to configure the controlls to a non gimp fashion. (seriously why is the default so bunk?)

Happy racing with whatever you choose though.

Please get a DFGT if using PC sims or check whether ports work well rather than waste money on any controller.
I don't know of anyone who moves to a wheel who isn't happy{as long as the wheel is good}, and would ever recommend going back to a controller.
The money u spend of a wheel will soon be forgotten once you realise how much fun they are....DFGT is the US should only be $99.

Well this question isn't really specific to racing games for me. Personally it's not my genre of choice. I just mean in comparison to the Microsoft 360 controller.

Trackmania is the most fun I've had playing a racing game - ever.

There are soooo many custom tracks and the online community is excellent.

It has a free version called TrackMania Nations Forever. It's a fantastic game (a perfectionist's nirvana, it is) but it doesn't play nice with a steering wheel.

Bah, too bad, because I'm leaning hard toward a steering wheel. Believe it or not, I haven't installed a single game yet that I got during the Steam holiday sale.

NFS: Shift 2 looks to be a real racing sim. Shift 1 was a hybrid between sim and arcade, but the creators of Shift 2 said they're leaning much harder toward sim on this version.

I couldn't agree more. I've been playing GTR2 for years now. There is a huge community of moders that provide tracks, cars, setups, etc. It's very realistic though, arcade racers don't care for it too much. And it's a bit outdated graphically speaking. But if you like customizing your game and want to race real circuits from around the world, then the Simbin titles are the way to go.

Quickly forgotten with 25 people racing against you :D :D
Plus, it has an awesome driving model and damn good feedback in the pedals, whereas a game like F1 2010 has virtually no feel in the pedals.
Race07/Evo/RACEON gotta be the best racing bundle the PC's ever seen.

Definitely get an xbox controller for games from codemasters. I have the DFGT and it works beautiful with the sinbin games but I drive like a drunken teenager in GRID. I also use it with Gran Turismo which is by far the best driving game I have played. I know its console and not a sinbin simulation but its fun and drives close to the real thing. (I don't know how a zr-1 corvette drives so I can't support that statement)

Amazing wheel, cause my DFGT doesn't work in GRID, works poorly in Shift and is lame as in DIRT2, but is superb on PC sims and F1 2010 PC.

Actually, I'm going to take that back a bit, my wheel does work well with Shift, but not with all cars, but lucky for me, most of my favourites do work.

Need for Speed: Shift 2 just came out. Leans heavier to the sim side compared to Shift 1.

Re: Help me pick a racing game

Sun Apr 03, 2011 9:07 pm

I was just thinking about this thread the other day, when I dropped 150 big ones on a logitech driving force GT.
Despite all my controller advocacy, I decided to see what it was like on the other fence and by golly is it greener.

F1 2010 has an artificial limitation on steering sensitivity with a controller or keyboard for that matter; taking in upwards of a full second to reach full lock. In some tight esses, it's almost impossible to not careen off the course, (Such as the first two corners of Catalunya). After plugging in the DFGT, it was bumper cars all around as I worked to find something comfortable, but eventually found it with slightly lesser feedback and linearity. With the DFGT's built in 200* lock and paddle shifters, it just felt RIGHT to drive around the track on race day.

As for GT5 though, there is no such 200* lock you can put in (even that driving force pro button combo). No option, so you have to turn 450* left or right to reach full lock which is virtually impossible on a place like Cote' de Azur in an F1 car.

Anyway I hope PD gives us a steering lock and sensitivity option in GT5. But in the mean time I'll eat my hat for what I said earlier and keep racing my arms off. :D
Happy race day

Steering sensitivity has already been added to GT5 in the latest update, but confusingly it's in the driving options window where you choose tyres, traction control, etc, rather than in the control options where you'd expect it. It still provides nowhere near enough fine control for wheels like yours or my G25 (PC games are far better for this), but it's a step in the right direction I suppose.

I noticed that too, except it's only for CONTROLLERS rather than wheels. It was probably put there to give controller users a bit of an edge over wheel using players. It helped me out alot when I turned up the sensitivity, but unfortunately it's not for the wheel.

I hope a new patch will come out addressing the issue, but given what's happened in Japan, I can understand the wait. :(

One of the things I like about Shift is the sense of speed at "speed" and also under brakes etc.
I'm at L50 now and have unlocked all the cars, and 90% or more work well, but some are like boats even after a works conversion.
GFX look sooooo much better with driver updates.

Try NFS shift for Sim

I lol'd, oh, I just can't stop, shift and sim

Shift is as far from reality as it can be, the cars behave like no idea what. Grid is so much closer to sim than shift, you can not even describe. Especially drifting part.

Either way, all those games are arcades, if you want realistic sim, get http://www.lfs.net/ it has a free demo with 3 cars and 1 track, and you can just unlock it to full version later, for 19$ S1 or 30$'ish S2. The best simulator I've seen, but completely unplayable without steering wheel. Feels like actually driving a car, with all responses, oversteers, understeers, spins etc. AI is very bad, but you can play online, and it can be really fun if you find a good server.

Either way, download a demo, and you'll understand how bad all those wannabee sims are.

LFS....yuk, ugly assed boring game I've ever played.
I don't know whether or not Shift2 is more sim than no1{they claim it is}, and if so, then it'd be fairly close to reality.
Shift1 has excellent driveability with most cars and a reasonable driver model, so if it's been improved, then we could consider S2 close to being a sim, and with good GFX, car models, sense of speed etc, I don't see any valid reason to reject it as a racing game unless one is a sim racing snob.

F1 2010 has excellent driveability, but isn't as realistic a driver as Shift1 in some regards, so S2 might be quite acceptable.

In shift, very first (150hp'ish) cars are somewhat in line if you turn all assists off. But as soon as something, even a tiny bit, interesting starts to appear, the whole sim goes down the drain. Suddenly RWD cars become impossible to drive even on straights, even with gas off. And even AWD cars feel like 2000hp RWD monsters with 20$ el-cheapo 160/75R13 tires in the rear. Awful.

LFS might feel boring, but the behavior of the cars is very realistic. RWD behaves like RWD, AWD like AWD and FWD like FWD. If not for the fact that that G forces are missing and you have to guess car behavior without actually feeling it, the sim is very well done. Takes a while, but when you can handle the F1 without traction control in light over-steer during the corners, the game becomes fun. Also teaches the racing lines and all the cornering stuff quite well. Some drivers online are making wonders with the same cars.

Not true.....the main problem is with your wheel and ingame settings.....that said, there are some cars that have poor driveability, but most are fine.
I use 220deg of rotation and 80% steering sensitivity.
I use auto as my paddles are kaput and also have ABS on, but everything else is pro mode.

Tried everything, even setting sensitivity to 0%, any somewhat normal car will just fishtail without any chance to straighten out, ever! On straights with gas released!

Not sure what the problem is....what wheel is it?
Go to Nogrip and ask how to set Shift up with your wheel, and describe all your problems, someone will probably know.

Sounds like a deadzone issue, especially if the wheel is a Logitech.
