AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE 3.9GHz (OCed)

Thu Apr 14, 2011 3:21 am

So, I got it to overclock at 3.9 ghz and run at 48-49C. I tested it with prime 95 and intelburn test.

I am very new to overclockin and I was wondering if someone could help me reach the 4.0-4.2 ghz range.

Here are my current settings:

What are settings should I be looking at?

And I have these sticks of ram:

Should I overclock the ram also? and how? and to what clock speeds?

I usually use the rule of thumb to stay at 1.5 volts or below for newer Phenom IIs with good cooling (though some swear by 1.55 volts).

As for the RAM - you could clock it up to "stock" speeds but you'd probably have to give the memory controller a bit more voltage to do it. Just remember to run memtest no matter what you do.

What's your process? Generally, it should be something along the lines of:

1. Increase clockspeed, test, repeat
2. Encounter instability
3. Increment voltage and start over at step 1 - But DO NOT exceed the safe voltage level of your CPU (google search it)
4. When voltage bumps stop giving you additional clockspeed headroom or start causeing exponentially higher temperatures, you've come to the limit.

I've never overclocked my X4 955, but I bookmarked a guide to doing so. Here's that bookmark:

Edit: and as for the RAM don't bother. It's simply worthless to overclock RAM anymore.

For gaming, I agree.

Jay
I'm not sure how much you know about the 955, however, it is an older model
do not compare it to 965 numbers you see going around
you are already pushing close to max clock on this chip
if you are not running water cooling I suggest you best throw in the towel before breaking something

Here is the most comprehensive guide to overclocking AMD chips I have found. There's some good stuff in there.

As a side note, I wonder what engineering sample Psychlone is currently using....
Phenom II X6 1055T, 8GiB DDR2, Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P, Radeon 5850, Antec 1200 case, Windows 7 Pro 64bit, a few TB of storage.

The 955 and 965 are identical dies. Both come in both C2 and C3 steppings.
