Tracking down old router firmware

Thu Nov 25, 2010 4:32 am

I need help finding (so I can download and install) the latest version of firmware for the D-Link DI-704P (hardware rev. B) router, an ancient piece of hardware that I'm going to install at my parents' house because although I can take advantage of all the coolness and advanced features of projects like Tomato firmware, all they ever want to do is browse the internet :)

The reason I made this post at all was because the US D-Link site no longer appears to host firmware for their older models. Strange practice, but anyhow... I updated the firmware to a newer version I found on an D-Link's Australian site, since at least they speak English, but I have a sneaking suspicion that even 2.75b3 is not the latest version. Archive.org was of no help either.

Can anyone point me to a place I can either download or verify that what I have running now is the absolute latest?

Thanks in advance, and Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Yes, that is the first thing I tried and what led me to post here... They don't seem to offer any firmware downloads on their north American site for the rev. B model.

It's a router plus print server and yes that is the correct link. however there is no updated firmware at that link. So if anyone has an idea of an FTP where I can go to get this new firmware, I'd be grateful.

ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/di704p_revB/

No firmware there. Maybe contact D-Link and see if someone's got a copy?

edit: There are other revisions of the DI-704P in the parent directory, some of which have firmware updates. Maybe they never released updated firmware for this revision.

Thanks for looking, guys. I guess I will just live with the antiquated piece of junk that is the stock firmware until the thing goes kaput.

May I suggest Tomato.

What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

I'll second the Tomato recommendation.

Any particular reason you didn't go with a newer router that supports 802.11n?

oops, sorry! forgot to subscribe to my own thread!
this router is at my parents' house and since they don't use wireless all that often (we ran CAT5 throughout the whole house a couple years back) - they really didn't need the extra speed since their newest wireless device is an ancient Dell Latitude D600 with 802.11b/g, and all the desktop machines are hard-wired. They really didn't feel like paying more than $50, and the WRT54GL was a steal at that price. Since they have so many unused ports throughout the house, if there's ever a reason for more wireless speed (doubt there will be), I'll just add an 802.11n WAP.

Oh, and I install Tomato by default on any router within reach that'll support it :)
