What I do see is people using Norton and other utilities indiscriminately. They end up screwing up their systems by doing so, whether or not anything was truly wrong to begin with.

I can't say I like Norton Utilities at all. I tried out crash guard a couple times, and all it'd do is tell me that my computer was crashing, it was never able to do anything about it. And Disk Doctor is crap. At work we're supposed to use it for trying to recover things off of bad floppies (2000 undergrads here, and it seems like they all have floppies that die), and I've never seen it recover crap. If anything, it does more harm than good.
