Norton or Windows blows

Sun Apr 07, 2002 9:14 pm

I installed Norton A.V. 2002 and got so many BSOD I'm going to see them in my sleep.

nothing but good experiences with Norton Antivirus here. Although the autoupdate checks so often and pops up messages so often for me to update you'd wonder what else Peter Norton sees...

Mcafee virusscan on the other hand just was horrible in Windows 2000 even the latest patched versions. Maybe it was just me and I needed to reinstall it.

No problems here. Have used NAV 2002 and Corp and haven't had any issues to speak of.

I have quite a bit of experience putting norton on all kinds of windows machines and can tell you this: indeed, either norton, windows, or both blows. I especially hate norton myself =)

I can't say I like Norton Utilities at all. I tried out crash guard a couple times, and all it'd do is tell me that my computer was crashing, it was never able to do anything about it. And Disk Doctor is crap. At work we're supposed to use it for trying to recover things off of bad floppies (2000 undergrads here, and it seems like they all have floppies that die), and I've never seen it recover crap. If anything, it does more harm than good.

I use two norton products, ghost and anti-virus. I don't run the anti-virus all the time or my whole system gets bogged down. I just run it every month or so. No problem with any of them.

Funny...if you set up either or both properly, and don't otherwise sabotage your system, they both work just fine. That's been my experience.

What I do see is people using Norton and other utilities indiscriminately. They end up screwing up their systems by doing so, whether or not anything was truly wrong to begin with.
You are false data.

The only problem I have with Norton is that it chews up quite a bit of my system resources. Checking system performance I find with Norton running in the background all the time my performance is only running at 79%. I don't know if there is a way to improve that or not???

Try Sophos

Try Sophos instead. Tougher to keep updated by well worth it.

Bingo! Speed is 100% correct on this one.

Norton Utils is a chainsaw, you can do an awful lot of work with your system, or you can cut off your leg. If you don't know what your doing, you *will* cut off your leg, and it's gonna hurt.

You should tell your school to purchase data recovery software for that, instead of using preventative maintainence software for it.

As for crashguard, that's mainly what it did, showed you when something crashed, and gave you the potential to recover from it, but generally wasn't able to. CG drove me NUTS for about a year till I figured it out. I'm still glad that they got rid of that..

DiMaestro, you said it better than I could have! I've seen many, many "severed limbs" like you describe.

Crash Guard stands out to me as an example of just how absurd things can get. The obvious solution is to demand better code.

We wanted to install just the disk defragmenting utility in Norton System Utilities 2000 for WinNT. NU has a dll in it that prevents some commercial instrument control and data aquisition software from accessing Paradox style databases. We talked with Symantec tech support for several rounds uninstalling and reinstalling NU with and without the dll each time after returning the OS partition to its state prior to NU installation. Finally we gave up and returned the software.

Thanks speed. I'll give it a try. I've been using a trial version of O&O but I see perfect disk 2000 is cheaper too.
