Seasonic X760 vs Corsair TX750v2?

Thu Apr 07, 2011 12:52 am

I have an overvolted Phenom II X6, overvolted GTX470, 3 hard drives, a SSD, 4 sticks of DDR3 RAM, also overvolted, and one DVD burner. This all adds up to around 550W of power, according to the PSU calculator:
http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

Now I want to run Folding@Home CPU+GPU. The problem is before on my Athlon XP I could run it 24/7 with no noticeable increase in noise, because the fan didn't have thermal control, and besides it didn't get that hot to begin with. But now, folding on an overclocked+overvolted CPU+GPU, I can quite confidently say that my Seasonic S12II-520W PSU is working full time, and when it does, it gets incredibly noisy, although it still can't beat my Octane (I already have aftermarket coolers on the CPU+GPU, much quieter). So I'm in the market for a PSU that'll handle my configuration while making as little noise as possible.

Enter the Seasonic X760. Tons of rave reviews. Problem is the cost. 190EURs for a 760W power supply is a hard pill to swallow especially when I can get a Corsair TX750 for half the price, throw in a Bluray burner, and still end up spending less than the X760. I heard that the X760 is very quiet. How much quieter though, does the fan start up at 550W? I don't really know. According to Corsair's site, the TX750 emits 35 decibels at 600W. I guess that's... good?

According to this review, the new version of the TX750 is actually manufactured by Seasonic. I'm sure the X760 is probably even higher quality given its premium price tag, but the TX750 sounds like its far from a shabby alternative.

Unfortunately the review doesn't measure noise, but with this capacity of PSU you should be fine. Even with your overvolting, and despite the PSU calculator estimate, I'd be surprised if your system really draws much more than 400W, so you should be well below the level where the fan seriously needs to kick in: according to the Corsair specs it only starts to ramp up above 450W, though I'd imagine this might be in low-temperature conditions on a test bench. Does your case have the PSU at the top or the bottom? This could make a big difference depending on how well the heat from the rest of the system is exhausted.

I'm pretty sure you're well under the 550w that the calculator finds, like MrJP said, you're much closer to 400w, particularly since you're using only one GPU. That being said, if the new TX750 is built by Seasonic then I can't recommend anything more unless you're doing some exotic overclocking (and have waterblocks on order), or need something modular due to having a case window. Heck, the only reason I wouldn't go with the TX in my next rig is simply due to wanting a case with a window!

Here's another review where they did test noise.

PC Perspective wrote:
Below 500W output and with a relatively cool ambient inlet air temperature, the TX V2 PSUs are quiet but far from silent. Once the load increases and temperatures start to build the cooling fan speeds up to where it becomes very noticeable at full load. For reference, Corsair's more expensive Professional Series Gold AX850 PSU is quieter at the lower power levels and incorporates a silent fanless mode, if you want lots of clean power and quiet operation.

I think he can be very close to 550W. I can draw 500W+ with an overvolted CPU (I also have the X6)+GPU (5850) while running BOINC but I am also under water and have extremely high voltages. I think you can't go wrong with the TX750, just be wary its not modular and there will be a ton of cables. You will be operating in the sweet zone of the power supply as well so your efficiency should shoot up as well.

If modular is an important factor, the HX series from Corsair is also getting positive reviews. For only a bit more money you could grab the HX 650 ( which should power your system fine ) or if you want the head room the HX 750.

I found the tx750 to be a little too noisy for my tastes. the seasonic is much quieter at low draws.

Was that the TX750 V1 or V2?

I've been using the V1 for a while and I've never noticed the sound at all...

... and it seems my PSU is gradually crapping out. It's still stable when my CPU's overclocked+folding, but not when my GTX470 is overclocked+folding as well. In all crashes, both screens turn black and any music I have loops the sample on and on. I heard that overloading the PSU generally results in a shortened lifespan, plus they lose efficiency over time anyway. I've had the GTX470 since Christmas, so I think that's plenty of time to wear out my PSU.

well the x760 is actually the guts of the corsair ax750

so compare the corsair ax750 and tx750v2

CORSAIR Professional Series AX750

then again the cheapest good fully modular is SILVERSTONE ST75F-P

Here's another Seasonic-based option: the Antec Truepower New 750W. A very positive review, and over here this seems to be selling for about the same as the TX750V2 despite being partly modular, and much cheaper than the HX750.

Well, I finally couldn't put up with the noise anymore so I got a TX850v2. That's right, not the TX750v2, the TX850v2 because it was just 10EURs more. Now the PSU is quieter than my CPU fan when both CPU+GPU are overclocked, overvolted and folding. It's as quiet as the same rig with the Seasonic S12II-520 but with only the CPU folding.

Unfortunately the TX850v2 comes with a WHOLE MESS of cables. My poor Antec Three Hundred can no longer hold all those cables within itself without some of them brushing up against the fans on my GTX470 and knocking them out of their hubs. So I've left the door open and the cables are just dangling out. It's a great excuse to go for a Graphite 600T White - I hate it when some upgrades just necessitate other upgrades with them.

Rubber bands/zip ties/wire ties much?

The backside of my case is itself a mess; aside from dropping in the SSD which is on it's way, my biggest challenge will be getting all of the wires tidied up. And that's WITH a modular PSU. Thing is, if you actually use most of the wires in the case, whether you get a modular PSU or not doesn't really matter!

If you did get the 850w unit and aren't planning on using three or more GPUs though, shame on you :). You have no need for that much power, regardless of price; that extra ten euros is now going to cost you more money in the end.
