What to do about electrical whine?

Mon May 16, 2011 7:03 pm

Today has been a very bad day for me. I was stress testing my pc with prime95 and came back home to find that it would not boot. No lights, no post, nothing. I pulled the power cable from the PSU and held down the power switch on the case. The pc booted when I reinserted the power cable. However, since then its been making a high pitched whine/crackle type noise whenever the cpu is doing anything or whenever I use my mouse or keyboard. The only thing that helps a bit is disabling power saving features of the cpu (cie, eist, etc). It sounds like the noise is coming from the board. This annoys me because my build is a quiet build. Literally this high pitched whine/crackling is the loudest thing in my box.

Specs:
Core i7-875k
Seasonic x750 gold psu
ga-p55a-ud3

Has anyone ever had to deal with electrical whine from their PC and successfully solved it without an RMA?

I shouldn't bother. Were you overclocking?

Yeah but it was a stable, very low voltage (less than 1.3v max vcore) overclock in linx I used for a long time. I just wanted to confirm that it was prime stable as well and only ran small ffts. Came home to a dead box...

I know in this area we've been having a ton of "brown-outs", lights flickering/ dimming and etc. My alarm clock was still the right time, but you never know with brownouts. I really don't think the OC was the issue. It was a very low (about 3.8ghz) speed and low voltage OC that had been stable for a long long time. I just suddenly got the brilliant idea to check if its prime stable as well...

Inductor whine. Look for toroidal wire-wrapped coils and find the one that's "singing". Unless you can find the same part and don't mind busting the warranty with a few swipes of a soldering iron, you're looking at an RMA.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

You know actually now I can't be 100 percent sure its not coming from the PSU. Oh boy... which is the more likely culprit in your opinions?

You've got me. Can you open it up on a table and power on, then stick your head close?

Prejudice tells me it's more likely the motherboard, but that's just because Corsair makes good power supplies... which is not to say that Gigabyte doesn't make good boards, but relatively speaking I think the p/s is higher-end.

Don't have any mates with a compatible power supply?

remove the psu from the case and keep it plugged in to be 100% sure it is not the PSU and ti is the board

Ah, yeah, you could do that. You could even fully remove it and then use a paperclip to jump it on:
