I take that to mean they're watching cards that have had transactions with PSN in the past. I could be wrong.

Also, probably more important, is that Sony never asked for CVNs so they're not storing them. And since they never stored them, they couldn't be taken. I have to think that if a bank sees alot of failed charges with invalid CVNs they'll know what's up.

True, But just to be safe I cancelled my CC associated with PSN last saturday and have already received my new card and number. It may have been inconvenient but it sure was easy and they were fast to turn around with the new card and number.

As did I, as I mentioned earlier. It's just good practice, but so far it seems like it might wind up having been OK. I just want plenty of advance notice as to when the service will come back up so I can get in, change my password, and get out before someone else does.

Wowza. :o Definitely glad I cancelled my card now.

A Gamestop lackey told me last night that PSN is supposed to come back up with a PS3 firmware update on Tuesday and everyone is going to be mandated to change their password upon login. I can find lots of articles where Tuesday is speculated but zero supporting evidence about a firmware update or anything else. Did I miss a link somewhere?

3.61 is live for when PSN comes back up. My guess is that it won't be too long now.

My PS3 says "You need to update to sign in". It checks for the update and then tells me, "Your system software is already updated". But I have system software 3.60! WHAT THE HELL??? Anyone else having this issue?

3.61 is the latest update. What region are you in? Maybe it's not available in your region yet? It's definitely mandatory to upgrade, though.

edit: As soon as I saw the "3.61 live" link that I posted, I checked system update and got the update. As soon as I got up this morning I looked on the PS blog and saw that my state was lit up on their map. I was able to sign in and change my password. So in the US at least it's workign as advertised. If you're elsewhere in the world, they lagged behind the US. On the official Playstation Twitter feed, they were bringing up Mexico, Europe, and the Middle East about an hour ago (It's now 3:45 CDT)

As of earlier today, PSN is up in Oklahoma but only for online play. Unfortunately, the PSN Store is still unavailable. That means that I am only able to play Mortal Kombat online if I use the 2 day free trial of the Kombat Pass, since the Kombat Pass that came with my copy of the game must be redeemed via the PSN Store. Also, I can't redeem my classic Sub-Zero outfit and fatality. :-? I fully understand why companies have started issuing one-time codes to authenticate online play, and charging those that buy the game used, but this is a really good example of when it's not that good of a idea. I went ahead and used the 2 day pass, but what happens if the store isn't up two days from now and I still have the urge to cut somebody's head in half? What then, Sony? What then?

You live in Oklahoma? This state is so ftw... Anyway.

How long has this online pass system been standard procedure? I don't usually buy console games for their online MP so the last one I bought that had it was MW2, I think.

I really hope the network can get back up and maybe we'll stop having 4 news stories a day on a single website about it. I really don't care what some security analyst heard in a rumor, and I'm tired of all the blame game crap with no evidence (none will surface until the FBI investigation is done and if fault falls on Sony they will be punished).

I dont know if it's been standard procedure, but it's been happening more often. I think EA was the first one to really start using it, with more studios following suit.

I own three of those games already, so I guess the choice of which two to get is easy.

I own inFAMOUS and at one time owned (and didn't particularly care for) LBP. I have twin-stick shooters (though not SuperStardust HD) on multiple platforms (Everyday Shooter for PS3 and Geometry Wars 1 for PC). So for me it's most likely down to Dead Nation and Wipeout HD + Fury, I think.

Still, it's a heck of a lot better than Undertow.

Also, I'll take a free month of PlayStation Plus. Speaking of which, how do the free downloads work? Are they only available for the month they're offered, or do you get to keep anything beyond that?

Chances are I'll be getting inFAMOUS and Dead Nation. I already own Wipeout HD, and wasn't really impressed with LBP. I would get Super Stardust HD, but between shooting zombies with shotguns or shooting spaceships with lasers, zombies always win. Always.

When does this start? I might need to dig out the PS3 because it's packed up for moving and I would hate to miss out.

They didn't give a specific date, just sometime after the store comes back up. You get 30 days from the start, so you might have already moved by then, but might not, depending on when the store comes up. Also, you shouldn't need to actually complete the download by then; it should (if it's like other PSN purchases) show in the transaction history on your Account Management screen, so you can download it (again) later.

Not so much hacked, as someone figured out how to generate the URL that gets emailed out, I think.

Sony's kind of stuck here - I mean, they need a method of retrieving/resetting passwords for people who can't remember, but the only info they have to identify you is the info you provided and which was subsequently stolen. They obviously need to change how the URL is constructed, but my guess is that enough info was stolen that it can be exploited again.

I guess this means I need to change my birthdate on PSN, and then remember what that birthdate is. edit: or change my email address.

IMHO, just wipe everything and start again, seriously. Fix the holes, fix the databases, and then just have everyone sign up again. Do NOT carry anything over that may have been compromised.

Here we stand a month out and its still has issues.

How about... not returning to the Playstation Network? A bit incredible to see how quickly people forgive for letting a company leak private and important information. Not only leaking but doing so in a way that shows a failure from top to bottom in management. Now this... at some point you guys are considering not becoming happy customers again, right?

Life is too short to be perpetually unhappy. Besides, I've invested enough money in the platform, I might as well use it. It's not like my info on PSN is real - my address is in Aurora, MO so I can avoid IL sales tax.

I think this will be a relatively simple fix. They're just going to have to add another layer of complexity to the password change routine. The "forgot password" response is going to have to include a randomly generated string that gets entered after you click the link, not as part of the URL, and the seed can't be anything related to account data.

Meh. Normally I would be angered if this was anything else but as it stands now except for a few games on the PS3 its nothing more than the best-damned-blue-ray-player-ever.

I just think that its really asinine that something this huge has happened and continues to happen.

It's like I can predict the past.

We temporarily took down the PSN and Qriocity password reset page. Contrary to some reports, there was no hack involved. In the process of resetting of passwords there was a URL exploit that we have subsequently fixed.

Consumers who haven’t reset their passwords for PSN are still encouraged to do so directly on their PS3. Otherwise, they can continue to do so via the website as soon as we bring that site back up.

the PlayStation Facebook page says that you can play Mortal Kombat online now without the online pass until the store is back up, which answered one of Dizik's questions.

They also apparently briefed developers that the store would get its first update in over a month on Tuesday and they'll do 2-a-week store updates until they have caught up. So that means the store should be back on Tuesday as well. http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/19/plays ... t-tuesday/

Yes, you can play Mortal Kombat online right now without needing the Kombat Pass. However, the lag ranges from bearable to atrocious, despite every person that I've fought showing that they have an optimal connection. I'm hoping that this is somehow a side-effect of an influx of people hopping on at once due to all of the PSN issues that's been going on lately, but I doubt that's the case. If the network doesn't improve, there's going to be an all-but-meaningless uproar from the online community.
