How much is you Internet download bandwidth for your enterprise ?
Which is the media download bandwidth ?

Yeah, Ethernet, not just TCP/IP. It's good to work in higher ed.

Working in K12 isn't too bad either.

We've got a dedicated fiber run that's currently capped at 20 Mbps. Within a year or two we'll be hooked up through cirbn.org and will be getting 100Mbps+. At that point I will no longer leave work.

Really ?, so your download rate is .. ?

Variable - not many other sites have that connection speed, and our internal infrastructure is limited to 100 Mbit to the desktop.

Not unusual to have one to three megabytes (that's bytes, not bits) per second, though.

We have a gigabit connection to the internet as well provided by the wonderful people at Janet. The fastest download rate I've seen was from a Microsoft mirror at about 30MB/sec. Typically downloads seem to max out at 8-10MB/sec but of course it all depends on the other end and the rest of the infrastructure between you and them.

We do have a 10gbit backbone and gigabit to the desktop here though.

We switched to a fibre line about 2 years ago, and it was originally a 10mb line, with a 5mbit cap to the internet (MPLS VPN setup between offices). We just upgraded the line though. Not sure if it's in place yet, but when finished, it'll be 20mb/20mb each dedicated to internet and inter-office vpn.

Having been on the provider-side of things, I found most people jumped on 100mbit Ethernet for ~$1,500/month.

40/40Mbit fibre from ISP#1 and a backup 10/10Mbit from ISP#2. End to end Cisco with BGP.

We don't need a ton with our traffic shaper. Keeps the misfits inline.

A sad 3 x T1 configuration here for our primary WAN circuit. Working on getting 10Mb/10Mb fiber connection but getting the fiber ran is expensive. I see 100-400KB download speeds. For large downloads, I drive 5 mins to my house with my laptop, download the file and drive back.

We had a DS1/T1. Then two DS1s. Then 10Mbps "ethernet" which was basically quad-bonded 2.5Mbps HDSL lines which seems to be the transport of choice for "DS" lines now, just bandwidth-limited.

Just got a special with Cogent for fiber. Their normal price is like $700 a month for a 3-year term for 100Mbps, got it on special for half off. Ayup. $350 a month for 100Mbps fiber. Considering our other stuff was like a grand a month, even non-sale prices would have been better. Disadvantage is that there are only certain high-density places wired for fiber so a downdown, 31-story building has it but out about 5 miles in a single-occupancy building, no dice.

Backup is just a 1.5 Mbps DSL line. We're interfacing with websites, not downloading video, so we're not very bandwidth-starved. And many of our vendors require us to have a specific leased line direct to their servers anyway so our internet connection isn't really business-critical besides for incoming email.

Do you have SLA's on that? Or is it best-effort? That'd be an amzaing price if you have a good SLA.

We used to have a single T1, Our CIR must have been 756k because it ran slow constantly, then again it was a dynamic T that Split it's available channels with the phone system. Every time someone woudl pick up the phone the bandwidth dropped 64k . A couple months ago I switched to comcast , and got there 10/20 service. I normally get 30/60 , ocassionally get 40/90. I think its $130 or so a month... Love it.

They call it "ethernet" too but it's a fiber line run into our network area with a fiber-to-ethernet converting box hanging on the end. Since they scale up to gigabit I assume they give a gigabit ethernet converter for those products. I think their SLA tracks it down to 15-minute increments for reimbursement.

We're in the midst of moving from our existing 10Mbps to the fiber so I can't give too much info. I do know that I was able to max it out with multiple downloads. The fastest single-source I found was a MS server at like 3 MBps but I made up the rest with lots of CentOS DVD ISO downloads. The network speed tests you find online were bandwidth limited on their side of things.

I don't know if Cogent has much of a presence in whatever hippy city you're in (Ft. Collins? Loveland?) but they seem to have some lines here in Denver.

We went with Comcast here in the Bay Area. We had bonded T1 that was very reliable, but it was something like $750 a month, and pretty much crawled when the students hit the holy trinity of Facebook/Youtube/Netflix. Monthly costs went down to $250/mo with the 50/10 business service with Comcast. The big pain was getting them to dig a trench to put cable in. That part took 6 months after the order! I tried to get them to also put some fiber in the trench while they were at it, but they declined.

So far the Comcast 50/10 has been very reliable and very fast. The downside is that they won't manage our DNS because they cannot handle .edu domains. Meh. Anyway, we just wrapped up a distance learning festival with a school in Beijing that went very well using 4mb streams. Yay, bandwidth!

I just installed a large Honda dealership today that runs their entire business off an 8Mb connection. Welcome to rural Canada.
BTW that's a 5Mb conn for the offices and a 3Mb conn for the garage.
