Tethering on AT&T

Fri Jun 24, 2011 6:46 pm

Yes you can.

I am currently using a Motorola back flip which is near useless and tethering the internet (Grandfathered Unlimited) to my Motorola Xoom.

For anyone else wanting to do the same I would highly recommend downloading PDANet Tablet off of the market before AT&T decides to try and censor it. So far there have been a few slight stability issues but that's what you get for running a beta app. The trick is to make sure to connect the server/client first then go back into the proxy settings and press save. For some reason this refreshes the proxy settings after the Bluetooth connection is made. This post was made via my xoom wifi only compliments of AT&T's wireless cellular network.

That's nice to have handy, in case I'm ever in a similar position. Posted from my laptop by the campfire, courtesy of my unlimited-data AT&T iPad and MyWi. :)

second for MyWi on the iphone. Laptop car charger->Laptop->USB cable-> iPhone means that as long as I have battery in the car and signal on the phone I have a hotspot. Great for long road trips!

I tether my Blackberry Playbook off of my Torch. ATT blocks the bridge app on app world but you can get an ota link off of crackberry. ATT cant detect it so they cant charge me for tethering.

Wow, they block the bridge on App World? That's sad. That kills 90% of the reason to have a playbook over any other tablet.

update. ATT just unblocked the bridge app. they stated if you use the bridged browser they will tack on the tethering fee automaticly. I smell lawsuits. and lots of them.

I thought AT&T had started forcing people to pay for the plan months ago, even if using third party apps to do it.

Only if you're burning through many GB per month. Even then, you can call up and make excuses about how it's Spotify+iTunes purchases+Netflix+Streaming media and they'll roll back the changes.

AT&T is not nearly technically competent enough to fingerprint apps or analyze data flow.

You're right. Those AT&T people are dumb.

We don't have any AT&T employees on TR, do we?

AT&T may not be the most with-it company out there, but I think you vastly underestimate their abilities. It's not a difficult task for them to do stuff like that. They have tools made just for that purpose.

Oh, I'm sure given the full weight of AT&T, all tetherers could be found and fined, but given at&t's lack of interest, I don't see anything more than the current half-hearted profiling coming into play.

Currently, AT&T just slaps the 4GB+tether package onto any 3G iPad that sucks down more than 4-5GB in any one month.

I know several folks who got slammed with it for non-tethered heavy use, and others who tether constantly without a word from the masters.

Ive already told ATT that i wont pay twice my grandfathered unlimited plan. the second they try to charge me for it i will cancel my phone plan. (im 2 years out of contract)

hopefully they stay sane and wont charge for my playbook bridging. other carriers are fine with it so ATT can get over it imo. Just ome more year and Ill be on Telus... one more year...
