That's a good warning. Mine is a December 2007 manufacture date, got it in March of 08. I wonder if it's coming due to do that stuff, which I'm sure would be fine since it's out of warranty anyway.

The PS4 is set to launch in 2012 according to Digitimes. Looks like Nintendo has got Sony worried. I bet the design engineers at Microsoft's Xbox division are having discussions right now about the Xbox 720 :P

I'll believe it when I see it. I think the PS3 and 360 have at least two more solid years in them. If it does come, I hope Sony learned its lessons with the marketing of the PS3, and I hope they make it more developer friendly. I don't much care about backwards compatibility.

Late 2012 in Japan, 2013 in the US at the earliest, IMO. You'll see a PS3 price drop at some point before the Wii U launches. Nothing to be scared of from Nintendo.

Well, crap. My 20gb got the red flashing light of death. Disassembly and thermal paste didn't help. Guess I'm headed to Target to buy a Slim tomorrow. Dammit.

Sony's repair service costs less than $100 for your out-of-warranty PlayStation 3.

We mailed in my Dad's PS3 slim and got it back in less than two weeks.

Was your HDD data preserved? I've a crapload of saved games I'd like to keep, but it seems unlikely.

No, the HDD data were not preserved. When I upgraded the hard-drive in mine, I used the built-in backup utility with a 16 GB USB flash drive to keep about 14 GB worth of downloads and saved games. It didn't recognize my 120 GB USB hard-drive for some reason. :-?

Well yes, since the old Ps3 is dead though I can't back anything up.

And if it's dead, putting the HDD into a new system won't help, either. Looks like either way you're out your saves. :-/

Your videos are gone too. Videos are a one time download per machine key. Since it wasn't able to be deactivated before it died then the license just got irrevocably burned by the now dead PS3.

Customer service might can re-auth the videos, but it requires a cs manager to approve it. The CS rep I spoke to didn't seem too sure it would be approved.

The HDD is encrypted via the secret key of the PS3 so shifting it to a different machine results in a different key that is unable to decrypt and so the data on the HDD will be lost. Repairs will most likely be replacements. The quote I was offered to fix my 60GB was $125, IIRC.

The above is largely why I chose to fix it myself. A bit of Googling about the red light of death implies that hardware died: Dead fans, psus, and unfortunately even motherboards. Power supply and fan replacement is a pretty cheap shot in the dark if you want to try it.

I cracked it open.

Fans are working. Looked pretty clean in there. The thermal paste on the Cell and RSX was dried out. Reapplied some Arctic Silver. No dice.

That's a bummer.

Sony's retarded schemes won't see anything unless its formatted as FAT16. . . . you read that right . . . . .FAT16. Not FAT32 or any other kind of data setup. The drive must be formatted using FAT16, then the PS3 will see it, but don't be surprised if you have to go through folders in an odd way to find and copy your files. If they now see drives that were formatted using FAT32, I will be quite surprised and happy at the same time.

As much as I use my PS3, I hate the way the music software is setup - it actually puts songs in different locations if I copy a whole folder, and won't let me move the song back into the folder where it belongs, and a re-copy won't do anything. So annoying.
. . . this is the digital projection of your mental self. . . .

Bought a Slim. $269 out the door with some discounts. Kinda nice having wireless (I can get rid of the bridge I was using) and I won't miss the BC except for one old PS2 game that had Atari classics.
