I am only hitting 3.4 GHZ on my i5 2500k, not overclocking. I would like it to be able to hit 3.7 GHZ like it can in turbo boost. In bios, I set the processor to "auto" instead of "by all cores unlocked", I don't know if this is whats holding it to only 3.4 GHZ. I have a ASUS p8p67 pro rev 3.1 mobo with turbo boost enabled. What do I nedd to change in order to reach the top turbo boost speeds?

Topic moved to OC/Cooling forum. Despite the subject matter being more Processors in theory, I think the crowd here is best suited for this particular question.

What are you using for monitoring the clock speed? If it's not CPU-Z, try using that first. IIRC Intel's Turbo Boost is set largely by thermal sensors. If you're using the stock cooler, I'd dump it in favor of the old favorites, a Xigmatek HDT-S1283 or a CM Hyper 212+.

3.7 Ghz is the MAX turbo boost rating, and it only achieves MAX turbo boost when its working one core. If you've got something pounding all four cores, the most it'll boost to is 3.4Ghz.

Find a heavily single-threaded benchmark and see if that doesn't push the processor to 3.7Ghz.


EDIT: Seeing this confirmed on other forums. Also, I see suggestions to check the "Power" settings on Windows. If it's set to "Performance" profile, Windows will try to keep all four cores ready. If you set it to "Balanced" it'll let the other cores idle down/sleep, which should allow you to get to 3.7 Ghz if you're running a single-threaded program.

Any gerbil here want to back me up on that last bit? It sounds reasonable, but I'm not 100% sure.

A quick and easy program would be Folding@Home. Get one of the non-smp builds, with windows gui client and you should be able to see.

Corsair A50 air cooler, intels turbo boost sensor I downloaded last night, says its at 3.4 GHZ, when I start my computer it says 3.366 GHZ in the main load screen. It doesn't say 3.7 turbo boost on top, same screen sata hard drive and dvd player dectected, two usb devices and one hub (mouse and keyboard)

Power and processor minimum state set to max performance/100 % at all times. This sounds right if you have seen it on other forums, but then why doesn't it say turbo boost at 3.7 GHZ when bios starts? This is what made me curious.

I ahve heard of folding@home, what is it, is it free (broke), is there a certain version that I should download?

The 3.366 GHz reported by the bios is irrelevant, it is just the stock multiplier of 33 multiplied by the stock FSB of 102 MHz (sneaky Asus).
