~$750 Build - Thoughts?

Fri Jul 22, 2011 2:54 pm

Any thoughts on this build? For gaming on a 22" 1680x1050 monitor and programming.

If you're going for the under-$800 crowd, I don't think I'd change a single thing. The very best CPU and GPU available for such a build, a nicely-featured motherboard, plenty of RAM, a SOLD power supply (Seasonic is great), plenty of storage in one of the better-rated HDDs around, and a case. I don't pass judgment on others' choice in cases, though I don't think I'd buy that particular one myself. Still, Antec makes solid cases. The only thing that's missing is an SSD, and that'd totally blow your budget. Maybe down the road you'd want one, but otherwise, wow. Good choices all around.

Welcome to TR, btw.

Your choices look good to me. I might step up to the Three Hundred case over the One Hundred.

Already have Win7 Ultimate x64.

I added this SSD - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820227726 - which is basically the cheapest 120 gig SATA3 SSD.

I switched to http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817371047, which is the same as the Seasonic S12II but cheaper.

Is the Three Hundred much better than the One Hundred? It's $20 more.

The One Hundred is $55 -15MIR. The Three Hundred is $59½. That looks like $4½ more to those of us who've been burned on too many mail in rebate offers.

Looks great. If you're planning to add a second graphics card, though, you may want to bump the power supply up to the 600-650W range. And add a nice tower heatsink for the CPU (I recommend the Hyper 212+). The stock cooler will do you for a spell, but it's not quiet or terribly good.

It's $29½ at Amazon or $32½ at Newegg.

The CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ is down to $25 at Newegg.

The Antec Three Hundred is still on sale for $47 at Newegg.

Free shipping FTW. 8)
