Owners of HP Dm1z

Tue Aug 09, 2011 4:52 pm

Im looking to buy a Dm1z to supplement my desktop pc for school and light mobile office work. How have these systems held up so far for the people that have bought them? Does it handle light photo editing (just cropping, changing brightness etc) of 10m pics. I have tried using single core atoms for this before but hated waiting forever for it too even rotate pictures. Also hoping that CIV IV can run well enough for airplane flights.

For school and light office - no problem. I purchased one for my son to use at school and that is working out well. I cannot comment on light photo editing or the game you mention. I will say the few times I tried using it, I would have liked a bit more horsepower.

the cpu does really hold back the gaming chops. expect l4d2 to be on low with low res. it's better than atom, but if you're expecting a competent gaming system, your out of luck. brazos will also lock up quite easily when multitasking. you just have to wait for it to catch up. i'd head llano if i was you. it's better than atom, but it's not a core 2 replacement.

For once, I agree with sweatshopking ;)
I have a Thinkpad X120e and it is quite similar to the DM1z you mention. It is noticeably slower than a regular notebook CPU. I would consider Llano too though I have not seen Llano in anything smaller than a 14'' machine.

Im coming from using my mother's Netbook with the atom N270 with 1gb of ram that I took when I was going on trips. It was good enough for 90% of the things I wanted to use it for. I have looked at the Llano offerings that are out so far but have been very disappointed with the weight that they all carry (really don't want anything larger than a 12.1in, 4lb). As far as games are concerned I think it should handle many of the older games that I haven't gotten around to playing yet...CIV IV is the most demanding, I have played this to death but would be happy if thats the only game that works. The list looks like this: Deus Ex & Invisible War, Half-life 1 (worked on atom), Max Payne 1 & 2 (worked on atom for 1), Serious Sam: First & Second Encounter, Portal 1, Far Cry 1, Knights of the Old Republic, and Torchlight (worked on atom with netbook setting). I really want to be able to view pictures that I take while on a trips from my DSLR and make some pictures good enough to email a few as far as photos go. I think I would be fine with a dual core atom (N550) but I really like the higher resolution of the dm1z...most dc atoms only have 1 gb of ram and windows 7 starter which can both be changed but for that price I can get the dm1z which has AMD graphics.

If you really want to do mobile photo editing in the 10MP range, look for a mobile Core2, max out the memory, and plan on paying the price. I own an Acer Timeline 1810TZ (11" display, still fits nicely on an airplane tray table) and have processed a large number of photos from my previous Canon 40D while on the road, with passable responsiveness.

you should be able to play all the games you listed. it's a damn good machine, i think you'd be pretty satisfied with it.

Hey,

Just picked up a dm1z, it's good for everyday usage. Regarding your usage scenario (light photo editing) it's fine. I've got adobe lightroom 3 installed on my dm1 without drama. In general it feels fast enough. will be using it mostly for uni/college purposes now.

I ordered one last week. It should be there sometime this week it looks like. I'll keep you all informed on how it runs. Thanks for the input.

So far I am very pleased with my purchase. I reformatted the drive using HP's minimum restore option which improved system responsiveness greatly.
- Great keyboard and trackpad very impressive for this class of machine
- Speakers are crisp and loud...much better than any netbook I have heard
- The glossy screen is bothersome at times
- Really like the form factor for couch sitting or taking it anywhere
- CPU performance is plenty for light photo editing but is sluggish if you start processing raw images etc
- System is able to play all the games that I listed with every setting pretty much maxed out
- Battery life is 5 hrs for gaming\watching videos, 6-8 hrs for web browsing
