The Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition has 6 MiB of level 3 cache and an unlocked multiplier. The "Phenom II X4 840" is actually the same as the "Athlon II X4" processors. Unlike every other Phenom II processor, It has no level 3 cache.

Are you set on that motherboard? Would you consider the Asus M5A97, instead?

AM3+ compatibility gives you a bit of future-proofing, if you think you might upgrade the CPU down the road.

Hey I read on a feedback comment on the Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition it required a higher watt or something that some mother boards that say its compatible, did not actually provide enough power. (aka one was like 90watts and the others were like 125?) Can anyone clearify if Asus M5A97 is enough power for the Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition, im not seeing anywhere on the mb description.

According to this page it looks like the 125W X4 955 is supported. I also see the 140W X4 965 on that list, so the VRMs should still have a little headroom even with a 125W CPU installed.

I was thinking of getting this mb ASUS M5A87 AM3+ AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard, and this cpu AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Thuban 3.2GHz, everything look compatible? Or how about the newer model ASUS M5A97 EVO AM3+, I want to get this one more so but am hearing alot of compatibility issues with ram?
