New system... its been 3 years...

Mon Aug 22, 2011 3:49 pm

Gerbils assemble!
So its time to upgrade/build a new system.
My current system is: AMD Phenom II x3 720BE, 4gb ddr3 1600mhz cas 7 1.9v, radeon 4870, dual 750gb WD Greens in raid, antec 750w psu, lian-li chassis, X-Fi titanium, asus M4A78T-E. custom koolance liquid loop (cpu only)

The system need to pull double duty as a game station and a workstation. I am a CAD/CAM engineering major, primarily using Catia v5r20. I am a college student so I need something reliable that will last hopefully another 3 years, with minor upgrades.
There are several components from my current system so I'm not building a system completely from scratch. I will carry over the chassis, HDD, PSU, DVD, and Sound Card to the new build.

My upgrade budget is $700, so now I'm looking for the best bang for the buck, on a mobo, cpu, gpu, and ram. I am still debating if an small ssd for use as a boot drive and for running cad software from would be a worth while upgrade.

Thanks for the recommendations.

My inclination would be to keep the existing motherboard, and max it out with an 1100T and 16 GB of RAM. That'll probably get you similar performance for a lot less money...

I would keep the board and just throw in a 6-core but the board is starting to act up, hence one of the reasons I'm upgrading. I have the cash and I want a system to finish school with.

If you're fairly certain that the motherboard is the problem, then yeah it's time for a new build. But have you definitely ruled out the PSU as a potential culprit?

yeah I've tested the PSU and ram, and swapped the cpu video card into my sisters system none of those seemed to have any problems

With this software do you know of any advantages/disadvantages to Nvidia vs. AMD GPUs?

From my understanding, P67 allows overclocking of the "K" series CPUs but does not let you use integrated graphics while overclocked (although you probably don't care too much about OC + integrated graphics). Additionally, the quick-sync video transcoding engine is disabled if you use a discrete graphics card (which you most certainly want to do).

The Z68 apparently removes these limitations. I would recommend the Z68 all other things being equal (like price). Otherwise, it depends on whether or not you want to do a bunch of transcoding.

Thanks, I don't ever do video trans-coding. my cpu will be liquid cooled so overclocking is a big want, and I don't care about integrated video at all.

If it were my money I would probably reuse most of the parts and get a new mobo, vid card and SSD

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... &Tpk=990xa $140
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820148443 $392
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814131374 $160

Total = $692

The SSD would give you some spare room with 256GB and help catia load up nice and fast, and you could OC your cpu till she blows then drop in whatever is around for dirt cheap or a bulldozer down the road. And the mobo has 4 usb 3.0 and 6 sata 3.0 slots. And the 6850 can run 3 or 4? monitors at the same time.

Edit - or get the 128GB SSD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820148442 $212, and some ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231455 $70 and goto the bar with the extra $110 or put it towards a hexacore or 955 BE and flip up the multiplier to oc , your call.

However it is your money, not mine.

What do you intend to do with the PCI slots? I will suggest that the GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 or P8P67-M Pro are better motherboards because they don't waste any resources on obsolete PCI slots, but instead have modern PCIe slots. If you do want to stick to the ATX form factor, how about the P8Z68-V LE?

I ordered one of those kits earlier this evening. You could save $20 if you ordered it in a combination deal with the motherboard.

Is there an increase in performance to justify the 6950 2gb price over the 1gb?

I've been running the 720BE at 3.6ghz for a year now, so I'm not sure how much more abuse it will take or for how much longer.
Its not that I need the PCI slots, I'm really only looking for 1 cpi-e 1x, and two pci-e 16x, beyond that slots dont make a huge difference.
ASUS P8Z68-V LE was one of the other boards I was looking at getting. the only thing that dissapoints is that you cant run the pci-e 16x as dual 8x.
I dont believe at the moment there is any real difference between the 1gb and 2gb 6950, I was thinking more about future proofing incase games start ramping up textures sizes or if I switch to an eyefinity setup.
the money for this upgrade is being given to me for specifically this use, so any money I don't use I loose, hence the reason for trying to eek out the most performance for the money.
