Time for new DSLR

Thu Aug 25, 2011 8:35 am

I currently have a Sony alpha-200, this puppy

Its time for an upgrade now. I went to wedding a few weeks ago, and the pictures were not good. This body is not good in low light - especially the lighting conditions we were in. The lens I was using (70-200/f2.8 ) worked fine, but I had to set the camera to an ISO 1600, sometimes 3200 - so things were a bit fuzzy for most of the night. I didn't carry a monopod (I wanted to enjoy myself and have a few drinks), so that's what I get.

My brother has an A380, and when we take the picture in the same low-light setting using the standard lenses that come with the body, his pictures are way brighter than my own.

It is time for a new body. I have my eyes on a few of them too.

Since I already have a nice lens, I'll stick with the Sony line - I'm used to them.

Sony A580
Sony SLT A-55 (first generation SLT)
Sony SLT A-65 (second generation SLT)

Are there any pointers I might be overlooking between the SLT's and the normal Alphas? like sensor size, low light shooting possibility?

Thanks.

The new A77 SLT is coming out now with a 24 MP sensor. Might be worth checking out.

Also, the NEX-7 uses the same sensor as the A77, but at $1200 (body only), is pretty expensive, and if you want to use Alpha mount lenses with AF on it, the SLT-based AF adapter is $399 (ouch!).

I'd stick to the DSLR or SLTs.

I pretty well know that the SLT A-77 will be out of my price range. I am hoping that the new wave of SLR's will drop the current prices by about $150. I might have to go with body only and use the 18-70mm the original camera same with, which means I will have two lenses - the original and the 70-200.

I would look at the Sony SLT-A65($999 - http://amzn.to/o5v69B) or SLT-A55($799 - http://amzn.to/rhXhc1)

Both would likely serve you well, and you can continue using your 70-200/f2.8 lens without any adapter.

You can find a full A55 review (http://bit.ly/cR0zH0) on Dpreview, as well as an A65 preview (http://bit.ly/naVqmG) on the same site. They gave the A55 a Gold Award.

The A65, is not available yet. It is available for pre-order via the above Amazon.com link. It is a significant step up from the A55 which was released in 2010, from what I can tell. The viewfinder and performance improvements appear to be the best part of the "Step-up." The viewfinder is something many Pros really enjoy with Sony's higher end cameras. Something you probably haven't experienced with the A200. I once looked through the viewfinder of an A900, it was an astonishing improvement.

The conclusion portion of the A77 review on Dpreview discusses the improvement/viewfinder experience. The A77 and A65 share the same exact viewfinder...

Good luck!

Today's B&H's newsletter had links to the pre-order page for the SLT-A65V with or without the 18-55mm kit lens:

Stick with the 16MP sony if you must. It looks like sony's 24mp sensor sacrifices too much. If you want DSLR format, that's the SLT-A55.

So did you ever pick up a new body lex-ington ? I just ordered the A55 for my wife a few days ago and it should show up in the next couple of days. It should be a huge improvement from her old Minolta Maxxum 7 digital.
