Core i5 2500K idling temps too high

Sun Sep 04, 2011 7:03 pm

Hi guys. I bought my PC last week. After installing all d software i need, time to burn in, and during my tests I saw
that my CPU temp was 41c idle. My MSI Control Center reports that the system temperature is 36c, My CPU cooler is d Coolermaster V6 GT
and the case is a Coolermaster Elite 430 Black, I just have a cooler in front and the chassis side panel is opened.

Your side panel is opened.... have you tried putting it back on to see if there is a difference? (positive or negative) The airflow through a case depends not only on the fans but on how the air channels past heat sinks and other components.
If that doesn't change anything, the next thing I'd check is the seating of the heat sink over the CPU. The seating & application of thermal compound can be tricky.

What is the vcore setting? This is the number one thing that will affect your system temps.
Also make sure the power saving features are on. Just because it says auto, doesn't always mean its enabled

The CPU is running @ stock. So now, d only thing that can b causing this, is the in-case airflow or the CPU cooler mounting. Let me just try to see

I took off my CPU cooler, and did a visual inspection on the part, and guess that I saw a little problem with one of the two screws for retaining the Heatsink.
I will return it to the store to get a new one on Wednesday and make the tests again.
Maybe the contact between d heatsink and the CPU metal cap is not perfect, thus making the heat to not be well transferred.

41 degrees is too high for idling? Mine is OC'ed at 4.4 and it idles at about 40 degrees with a Cooler Master 212+. I'm no tech expert, I just want to know if mine needs "fixing" too.

What app do you guys use to measure all these CPU temp's? I don't think that's in CPUID's CPU-Z is it?

My Core i7 2600k running at 4.55 GHz. Using Core Temp 0.99.8, my idle temp is 31c. This is done with a Cooler Master Hyper 212+ (Push+Pull Nexus Real Silent 120mm) With Arctic cooling MX-4. Load temp is up around 55c. Vcore at 1.4v. How you apply the Thermal Paste makes a huge difference. On my Cooler Master Hyper 212+ I applied a line of thermal grease directly on each of the heat pipes about half the length of the mounting surface.

Did you buy this already assembled or did you do it yourself? Were you happy with the thermal compound on the hsf? Is it seated well?

I found that its not seated well, because one of the screws for retaining the heatsink is not good. Tomorow im going to the store to get new screws, and see if I can solve it. I mounted it on my own, this is my 5th PC, and i never had such probs.
I put the thermal paste on the center of the CPU metal cap.

I use d MSI Control Center, I dont know whether it is accurate, because AIDA64 says another thing, like 2 degrees less than what MSI CC reports. and even, when i touch d heatsink, it feels very very cool.

I don't know why you guys are worrying, those temps are perfectly fine. Idle temps are rarely something to worry about unless something is drastically wrong (like 60C at idle). What are your load temps? That is the most important thing. I would use hwmonitor for temps and either Intel Burn Test or prime95 for load test. I'm unsure what the i5 2500K's max temp is, but staying under 65C is ideal for all processors.

If you have a lot of airflow and you are getting 40C idle it could be an issue, but even then not that big of one. Mine is constantly at 39C for idle but I also run a very low CFM low db build.

Well this is awkward, I downloaded core temp and it is saying another thing. It says 35~36 degrees. One thing that is noteworthy, is that im living in malaysia and the temperatures here are a bit high now.

When I overclocked my CPU till 4,5GHz it gave me 64 degrees under 100% torture in AIDA64 extreme test. And I dont have great airflow, just one cooler in the fron, and my case is opened on d side panel

Never test with an open sidepanel unless that is how you intent to permanently leave the computer. Those temps don't seem horrible for a 4.5Ghz overclock honestly. Did you give it any V-core? If so, sounds about right.

I like to work with it opened, but I think im going to close it, and invest on case airflow, because temperatures in Malaysia are damn high. I applied 1,35V for d CPU. And tortured it with AIDA64 test

Yea, if you pushed that much v-core than those temps sound about right for 4.5Ghz. I would however test with the sidepanel closed. Might actually get better temps with it closed due to pressure, might get the same temps, or might get worse ones. Goodluck!

yeah, what im seeing is that I have to improve my case airflow in order to get good system temperature, mines are 38~39 degrees. There's a lot of improvements i still have to do.

That really sounds fine to me, where did you get the idea that it isn't? What temp are you shooting for, and if mid - high thirties aren't pleasing you have you considered water cooling?

I went back to the store that sold me the Coolermaster V6 GT, they gave me a new one, so now the screw with a tread problem is solved, put on the CPU, and the idling temps is 37 degrees.
Very good, for a PC without all the extra coolers, now I will invest some money to buy, 4*120mm CM blue fans and make the system get better.

I like to see CM v6 GT working, this cooler looks like a damn car engine! lol

Hold on... temps in Malaysia???

What is the AMBIENT temperature of the environment around the computer? Thermodynamics 101* says that you're never going to get cooler than "room temperature" absent an active heat exchange system like refrigerated cooling (not just liquid but refrigerated liquid with phase changes and all that) or a Peltier type device. If your ambient temperature is already at or above 30C, then 41C is nothing to worry about whatsoever. You need to remember that all of the review sites (at least the competent ones) are doing fan reviews with an ambient temp of ~20C or so. The cooling fan can only cool between the range of the max temp of the CPU and "room temp" so if you are in a hot room in Malaysia, or anywhere else for that matter, you ain't gonna do any better with fans or even non-refrigerated liquid cooling.

(*Well yeah, I did skip thermo in school.. there's a reason I wasn't an ME)
