The Sweeter Spot SLI

Fri Sep 09, 2011 11:11 pm

Hi all!

Seems I end up back on this forum every few years for a new build (http://techreport.com/articles.x/21462/8). Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm going the nvidia route again, and I already have the following graphics card: N560GTX TI TWIN FROZR II OC

1. I was planning on buying another 560 TI to SLI in the new system (to try out some 3D gaming), but... then this little sale came along for a free copy of Batman: Arkham City, so I need to pick another card that qualifies for the promotion but will also play nice with my current card. Can you guys recommend one? Here's the list of choices: http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=br_lf_m_1000715501_grlink_1?ie=UTF8&plgroup=1&docId=1000715501

2. Is there anything else I need to know about SLI before I build this system? Is there anything I need to add or change with the Sweeter Spot?

3. I currently have this build: http://techreport.com/articles.x/15009/6 I was thinking about using the old power supply, hard drives and sound card... no idea if the old case could work or not. In any case, please let me know if I should use these old components or get new ones.

Thank you,
-Ari

You definately need to read this:

Personally, I would never choose my hardware for 1 free game. You know you need a new monitor(s), right?

But I have yet to find compelling reason to buy into this "3-D" stuff. For the amount that is invested on two cards and special monitors, the return is infintisimal. However, if you have Howard Hughes-like resources and the desire to satisfy your every whim, then I say go for it!

If you must buy a GeForce GTX560 Ti, then the EVGA 01G-P3-1567-AR has the best warranty and the PNY VCGGTX560TXPB is the cheapest of the ones in the promotion that you linked.

You'll probably want an SSD and Windows 7 64-bit for your new system.

If I had infinite resources, I'd be building a double-stuff workstation, wouldn't I?

I have a genuine passion for 3D technology. I'm one of those people that absolutely loves it and can't understand why more people aren't getting on board.

In regards to the video card, I was planning on getting another 560 TI before I even heard about the free game. The game is just nudging me to actually move forward with the purchase! It hadn't occurred to me that I could SLI a different 560 TI with the one that I have, so I need help picking one. You guys are the gurus! Which is the best fit with my existing card?

And in regards to a monitor, I'm planning on getting a 3DTV within the next year or so. I'll be sure to research which work well as 3D monitors before I buy one though.

EVGA 01G-P3-1567-AR looks like a winner to me! Thanks for the advise.

I will definitely be getting a Solid State Drive! I've heard some rumors about them being unreliable though... I'll probably get the one recommended in the System Guide. And yeah, I'm running Win 7 64 right now on the 2008 sweeter spot.

What about my old power supply, case, sound card and hard drives?

Do I need to consider anything special for cooling?

You already have one of these? It looks like it comes with the same game offer as the other ones that you linked.

This is what I have:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004JLNZXU

Bought it long before the game promo.

Is the EVGA 01G-P3-1567-AR still your recommendation?

If you're happy with your existing card, you could buy another one just like it.

Brilliant. That card was excluded from the game sale on Amazon for some reason. Newegg and JustAnEngineer to the rescue! Thanks. :)

So that solves the video card issue... And I'm sure I can use the old sound card...

What about the power supply and case?

Your power supply and case are just fine.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I ended up with an Antec One Hundred on my 2008 build (http://store.antec.com/Product/enclosure-gear_for_gamers/one-hundred/0-761345-15240-2.aspx). But I suppose that's comparable to the Antec P182.

Alright, I've got a game plan. Thanks for all of your help!
