8 GiB PC3-10600 for $35

Tue Sep 20, 2011 6:14 am

Newegg has 2x4 GiB of PC3-10600 memory for $35.

G.Skill Sniper F3-10666CL9D-8GBSR (DDR3-1333, CAS 9, 1.5 V)

They're throwing in a free 4 GiB micro-SDHC card, too:

That's damn tempting but I'd feel wrong mixing DDR3-1600 with DDR3-1333...even though for 99.999% of the applications I run it will make no real difference.

I'm interested in this deal. BUT... The 8gb existing memory (Corsair XMS3) I have now is faster (DDR3 1600 PC3 12800) then the ram offered here (DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666).

If that's the case, installing this slower ram will decreased my overall performance from 1600 down to 1333, on all 16gb, right?

Yes, but it's all but unnoticeable in normal use.

I dunno about you guys, but this is more appealing to me than 8GB of DDR1333 CAS 9 memory....

4GB DDR1600 CAS 6-8-6-24-2T
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231444

Read the articles from good ol Anand ... He, and others, have proved that DDR3 1333 CAS 9-9-9-24 is darn near on par with DDR2 1067 5-5-5-15

On todays chipsets:

Another must read from Xbit:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/memory ... 600_6.html

And on older chipsets:

For nearly twice the cost I don't see the point in going with the "fast" memory. Almost nobody does things that are constrained by memory bandwidth. Gaming and day-to-day use certainly isn't - the links you provided even prove that!

Case in point: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/memory ... html#sect0 and http://www.anandtech.com/show/2792/10

Nearly double the cost for a near-unnoticeable difference in speed? No thanks.

EDIT: HOLY CRAP. That's a 4 GB kit you linked. Nearly 4 time more per GB for a percent or two? No thanks even more! How could you possibly come to the conclusion that fast memory is worthwhile based on those links?

$63: 2x2 GiB DDR3-1600 CAS 6-8-6-24-2T, 1.5V

That's too tiny. Don't buy such low-density DIMMs. You're paying $126 for 8 GiB of memory and once you've populated four DIMM slots, you'll find that you can't run the same tight timings that you could with just two DIMMs.

If you really believe that it's worth spending three and a half times as much to get faster timings, take a look at this 2x4 GiB kit of PC3-12800 for only $100:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820233219
Corsair Vengeance CMZ8GX3M2A1600C7R (DDR3-1600, CAS 7, 1.5 V)

Here's a 2x4 GiB kit of PC3-17000 for $210:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820233207
Corsair Dominator CMT8GX3M2A2133C9 (DDR3-2133, CAS 9, 1.5 V)

You did notice I said "To me", or were you too caught up on making your point to read me correctly?

I don't need 8GB of memory... Especially with a CAS of 9.

At the <$75 price point - What I posted works better for my needs.

k, cupcake?

Well if you want to be wrong, it's cool. You're paying through the nose for something that isn't tangibly faster. The high-performance market was made for suckers like you.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

This.

But hey, if you want to spend 3.5 times more on something that will perform identically...go right on ahead.

Thanks for your permission.

... And your opinions, though the usefulness of them is questionable.

The same goes with your conclusions based on the links you posted.
