Exciting time for baseball

Wed Sep 28, 2011 9:08 am

Play offs are on the horizon.
Boston/Tampa tied for wild card
St. Louis/Atlanta tied for wild card
Could quite possibly have 2 play in games tomorrow.
Wow.

Yeah, the jokers who said baseball needed another wildcard to create excitement were sure proven wrong - if not for a single wild card slot in each league, there would be nothing to play for today - the 4 teams tied for the 2 slots would all be getting in anyway.

Gotta be super-frustrating if you're a Braves or Red Sox fan right now, though.

Well, not exactly. According to the proposal that supposedly is gaining support in the negotiations with the player's union (though this comes from the NYPost via "sources" so take that FWIW), and could be implemented with the new Collective Bargaining Agreement as soon as next year, the excitement would move from today, when the wild-card will be decided in the regular season, to a day or two from now, when the two wild card teams in each league would face each other in a one-game "play-in" to deterimine which is the real wildcard. While that seems a bit silly (by diminishing the importance of the regular season) it wouldn't seem quite as silly in some past years when the wildcard was essentially decided well before the last few days. Then the attention would've shifted to the "second" wildcard race, which might have been tighter -- and in any case involved at least one more team and its fans in late season excitement. Although the other reason for this is to "punish" the wildcard by forcing it to play one more must-win game, thus potentially screwing up its rotation relative to the true division winners (there's a perception that wild card teams have gone all the way to the World Series too often --1997, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007 -- and so need a bit more of a handicap, or the division winners need more of a reward)
Gotta be super-frustrating if you're a Braves or Red Sox fan right now, though.
And hilarious for everyone else. I was at a bar last night and there was one Sox fan sitting by himself, muttering and yelling at the one TV that was showing the Red Sox game. Of course he was getting drowened out by everbody watching soccer, but it was still amusing to watch him agonizing as his team scraped its way back into a tie with Tampa in the race.

That's quite different than at the start of spring training when General Bud "Allan" Selig suggested an extra series and all the players groaned very publicly. All the talk was about how it punishes division winners to give them a bye, because they'll be rusty or some junk. I didn't buy it then.

There's very public talk, though, about moving the Astros to the AL West and having year-long interleague as part of the team's sale. I'm kind of intrigued by that, but it's going to require a consolidation of rules - either the DH needs to be all across baseball or not at all. That's just IMO btw.

I do not mind laughing at the Red Sox fans, but I was more interested in seeing a non-Rays team challenge them. The Angels were right there for a while. I'm obviously quite pleased with the results in the NL so far.

Looks like the Red Sox will hold on assuming the rain lets up. Still a 50/50 shot at a playoff game in Saint Louie Louie tomorrow, if the Braves pull it out.

edit: dude, I swear it was 7-0 a minute ago. I guess it could wind up with two playoff games yet.

So yeah, epic Red Sox fail. Its not the franchise's fault or the fans' fault but I'm ecstatic. ESPN must be hella pissed and that makes me smile.

Of course now all we'll get is a steady diet of Yankees.

And it makes me ill that the Cardinals are in.

Well that was exciting baseball last night to be sure.
Two monumental collapses.
Going into September the Rays are are 9 back
The Cards are 8 1/2 back
Both are in.
Go Cards.
If the Cards knock off Phillie and the Brewers knock off "the Backs"
They host the NLCS
And if they win that series, they have home field for world series thanx to Bud
Let the play offs begin.

IAmGhostDog I'm confused - if the Brewers win and the Cardinals win, how does St. Louis start out the NLCS at home? Or maybe that's not what you're saying, that the Brewers get home field because the Cardinals theoretically beat Philly?

I don't know that STL has much of a shot against the Phillies, though they did win the season series. My picks are something like this - a 2009 WS rematch. Hope I'm wrong. I'd go for a 2006 WS rematch with the same result. :p Given my track record from last night, it's probably going to be AZ and Tejas in the WS or something.

Phil over StL 3-1
Mil over AZ 3-2

Phil over Mil 4-2

NYY over Det 3-2 (Verlander wins 2 games all by himself and even drives in the winning run in both of his starts, despite this being the AL)
TB over Tejas 3-0 (the Rays are just way hot right now)

NYY over TB 4-2

NYY over Phil 4-3 and ESPN spooges all over Jeter (who goes 0-24 and gets WS MVP anyway) and Rivera (who is a stud and deserves it).

Not a baseball fan really,But the Phils have been a pleasure to watch the last 4-5 years,I really hope the Phils and NYY make it to the WS.Its payback time,Still be nice if they win the WS against any of the AL,But NY is who i want them to play.Just want Utley to get his swing back or he has been taking it easy so he doesnt hurt himself until it counts.

So naturally the Boston media has been whining that the yankees "blew the game on purpose."
Maybe if papelbum could've gotten one more out that would all be moot (or the red sox could've won another game or two in September).

I've got yanks/tigers tickets for tomorrow...hope we can beat Verlander (who could win both the Cy Young and MVP)

With Boston out (read - Jacoby Ellsbury), I think it has to go to Granderson unless the Tigers go really deep and Verlander has some great stuff.

Funk - I'll say...

Phil over STL 3-0
Mil over AZ 3-2

!!!!
Mil over Phil 4-3
!!!!

NYY over Det 3-1
Texas over TB 3-2

NYY over Texas 4-1

BrewCrew ftw 4-2

Take it to the bank.

Sorry for confusion, lack of clarity.
They would be the Brewers because of 2nd best record in NL.
Not gonna' make any predictions. Would obviously like to see the Brewers make a deep run.

Two games today and four tomorrow.

Cy Young yes, MVP no.
MVP traditionally goes to an every day player.
Has a pitcher ever won a league MVP?

I remember that Sandy Kofax, Bob Gibson, and Dennis Eckersly have won the MVP.

A pitcher must TOTALLY dominate the league to win the MVP. Pitchers have only won the award a couple of dozen times since it was initiated.

And the Red Sox just fired/let go/allowed to resign/didn't pick up his option Terry Francona. From the perspective of this Yankees fan (go suck an egg), the team fired the wrong guy.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Roger Clemens' 1986 season was the last time a pitcher won the MVP.

Verlander has been good this season, but certainly not MVP worthy. If you put Verlander's season into perspective, it was a very good pitching performance but certainly not dominant. Pedro Martinez's 1999 season was absolutely filthy and he failed to win the MVP title.

I also have qualms with Granderson winning the MVP. Jose Bautista in my mind was the clear MVP choice for awhile, until I looked at his performance in the second half of the season. Honestly I'd rather have Miguel Cabrera win the MVP than Granderson, I'd say he is more deserving.

That being said, go Rays! They just romped Texas in the first game, hopefully Shields can do well tonight.

If Éric Gagné couldn't win the MVP award in 2003, no pitcher should.

Logic has no relevance in a discussion about MVP and Cy Young candidates.

OTOH Gagne pitched about 80 innings in 2003. Verlander has thrown roughly 3x that. Starters are more worthy than closers - how often is a save against the 7-8-9 or 8-9-1 hitters in a lineup? Often times a closer doesn't face the best players on a team where a starter pitches to them all. Closers have no business in the discussion. Starters face as many (or more) batters over the course of a year as a typical position player gets plate appearances and defensive chances.

Well there you have it folks.
This is indeed a exciting time for baseball.
3 game 5's.
1 tonight.
2 tomorrow.
Texas is in.
Brewer's give up grand slams in back to back games. Ouch.
And their pitching which got them here is suddenly suspect.

Heh, yeah, the Brewers and the Phillies suddenly don't look so invincible. They look totally... vincible? Is that a word?

And I was glad to be wrong about Texas. That's pretty cool for them, two years in the ALCS at least.

That .... was great baseball.
Three game 5's decided by one run.
Cards and Tigers win on the road against the best teams in their respective leagues.
Brewers in 10 after Axford blows the save. (But gets the win)
And Carpenter pitched a master piece. Three hit complete game shut out.
This season is shaping up to be one for the ages.
