The first sign of winning after seven years of 5-11 or worse was ditching JaMarcus Russell. The second sign was the 2010 draft, where height-weight-speed was no longer the mantra. The third sign was 8-8 last year. Now the Raiders are in the best shape in nearly a decade. Al Davis' problem, particularly after Super Bowl XVIII was his ego and need to dominate everything and his demand for complete loyalty to him. Why do you think Mike Shanahan hated him after he was fired in 1989? Jon Gruden was pissed off too when there was no contract extension, given what he had done in 2000 and 2001, and then was traded to the Buccaneers.
Al Davis was a great man, but his football acumen was obsolete about 25 years ago. This was best reflected in poor draft choices year after year, which led to mediocrity or worse seasons for a long time. RIP Al Davis.
