I didn't own a "Golden Fingers" device, but I did use the #2 pencil trick, and (later) the conductive paint trick on Socket A CPUs to unlock multipliers and SMP functionality.

Yeah, I actually overclocked my Duron 600 to 1GHz, first at 10x100, then at 7.5x133. It was faster the second way and cooler at the same time.

My favourite CPU is either the C-50 or i5-2500, depending on the situation. The c-50 has allowed me to have a 10 inch 1120gram laptop with around 5hrs battery life that can play older games and 1080p h264 video using HDMI out. For me the c-50 aspire one is the best laptop money can buy.

Of course on the desktop an i5-2500/2600 is way better for running STALKER and encoding video.....the c-50 can barely run l4d1 at the lowest settings possible.

my cpus..:

-Intel 486 DX, on a crappy machine with 4 mb ram, whitout soundcard, which both where bad things at the time I finally got m.
-Intel pentium 2 300MHz, on a good machine with a crappy 4mb gfx card.... and a Roland Rap10 soundcard which didn't like windows
-AMD 1200MHz T-bird with its 133FSB which I could overclock to 14xx (first pc I choose the components for)
-AMD Barton 3200+ which somehow couldn't over or underclock a single MHz.... (which often ran at 79C but didn't die on me ever..)
-Intel Celeron 1.3 Mobile, wich still runs great in my Dell inspiron 6000 notebook and is OC'd to 1700 bij a Pin-mod (fsb 533 to 667)
-AMD Phenom II x3 (which is unable to unlock it's 4th core and runs stable) but is OC'd to 3.5GHz (NB at 2.5) on a cheap arctic cooling Freezer64 and never runs hotter than 51 C...

hmm though choice Think th T-bird and Phenom have to be my favorites, just because I can tweak as much as I like with those systems ;)

I very much like Sandy Bridge and what she brings to the table... at least in terms of what I were to buy today.

If I were to get nostalgic, I get all warm and fuzzy thinking of the P4 hyperthreaded processor that is still running well on an old computer of mine even after over 8 years. It was very competitive for a very long time too; stood strong for a lot longer than a lot of other processors it seems.

1. Celeron 300a overclocked to 450.
2. C2Q 9450 undervolted and overclocked to 3.2ghz.

The q9450 is what I'm currently running and it's brilliant as well and might replace the c300a as my favourite CPU. Other then 'it's shiny' I don't actually feel a need to upgrade yet to anything newer.

I loved my FX60 dual core as well as Phenom II 940 that followed it. Both excellent CPUs. Third mention goes to my current 2500K which OCs amazingly well with very few tweaks.

As for old CPUs, I think the Mobile Athlon Barton 2500+ chip was pretty amazing. Nothing from the 90s though as my CPUs were often Cyrix and AMD which were slower than Intel counterparts.

Pentium D 940, Q6600, E8400, Core i5 750, all of these were extremely great values for the money, after a few months and when I eventually get to play around with some of the newer 1155 CPU's perhaps I'll add a favorite to that list.

My original Slot A Athlon 600mhz running at 1000mhz. I also loved my Dual Coppermine P3-800's. I didn't have them very long for some reason, but I don't remember why.

My AMD Athalon 2600+ (Barton Core). Was running that in a MSI K7N2-Delta motherboard for the longest time, overclocked the hell out of it as the years went on and the system became very aged. That CPU still works to this day, but has since been retired :P

Tough choice. I've had 3 CPU's that were the most amazing overclockers. I guess I'll have to go with the one that surprised me the most.

It was a Socket 754 AMD Athlon64 2800+. it ran stock at 1.8Ghz and had the Clawhammer CPU core. On air cooling I could power it up to 2.8Ghz. Some games would make it heat up too much and it would start acting funky, but when clocked at 2.6Ghz it was perfectly stable and just a bit hot. I normally ran it at 2.4Ghz to be on the safe side though late in it's life it was pushed to a constant 2.6Ghz. IIRC most people were only getting 2.0 maby 2.1 out of them. I had that little thing for quite some time before I sold it to some one here on TR.

I'm going to jump on the Celeron 300A bandwagon again. I went through a couple before I found one that was stable at 564MHz.

The reason I liked it so much was because it was actually the fastest CPU available to consumers at that time. The flagship PII-450 was triple the cost of the 300A and thanks to its more complex off-die cache, didn't seem to overclock anywhere near as well. Even if money was no object, the 300A was the fastest chip available, period. A small amount of 1:1 clocked cache seemed to do better back in those days than quadruple the amount of cache clocked at 1:2. Being the same architecture and silicon as the PII's designed to run on a 100MHz bus, all 300A's ought to have reached a 450MHz simply by switching to a 100MHz bus. I wouldn't be surprised if many novice system builders ran their 300A's at 450MHz by accident because dip-switch motherboards would often have been set to 100MHz by default.

The fact that the Mendocino was so cheap just sweetened the deal....

The 300A's were slot A. The later Celeron 533's and such were Sock370's for the BP6. I think I had 2 Celeron 600's in a BP6 at one point.

It was my third chip that was mine and not my familys, and it was really my first jump into the enthusiast world. I'd carefully selected it based on price and TR reviews, and it stuck with me for ages. I sold it a few years a go to a girl I liked, and I know its still going strong and not really being a bottleneck in the games she's playing.

It's that exact CPU I'm still using right now. Next build, post-college, will be Intel though. I haven't gone Blue since the Pentium 2 or 3 I bought in the late 90's.

Of the old Celeron generation my fave was an old Celeron 333 that overclocked to 550MHz on an MSI BXMaster.
I also had a 300A, but I was using a crappy Soyo board at the time (with very limited voltage adjustments) and my chip wouldn't quite make it to 100 FSB so it ran at 405MHz.

I've had precisely two CPUs of my own. The first was a Core Duo (first gen) in my college laptop. Wasn't really my choice since it was in all the freshman laptops, though. Got the job done and is still kicking after tons of abuse.

My first and current desktop has an i7-920 inside, and I <3 it a lot. I've got it paired with a GTX 460 currently they've handled any game I've thrown at them with ease.

I've had a number of favorites.

If I had to pick just one for the overall gold medal? Athlon 2500+. Sucker undervolted and overbussed to 3200+ with no sweat at all, and could go just a little farther on good days, with love and TLC.

Other notable luminaries?

Dual 366A@550 on my BP6. Those twins live on in my desk drawer, though they'll likely never boot and do work again.

Pentium III-S 1.4GHz Tualatin. This and the Dell I found it in, on the roadside, are still in my computer room. Nice and clean too, which is rare for curb computers.

Pentium III 800EB slot 1. Still have this, the 815EP mobo, and 512MB of PC133 in my closet, waiting for the second coming of Windows 98SE.

My matched Pentium III 600E@800EBs, on the legendary P2B-D. I sold this as a tested setup to Twofer, who never had any complaints. One time he actually had one CPU come unseated, and the system TRUCKED ALONG LIKE NO THANG (light a CPU, but still...). That still blows my mind. 440BX was NOT rated for hot CPU add/remove.

Had a really nice Athlon 750 that did 1GHz+ with ease, but a waterblock and bad OCZ advice killed it.
Please don't edit my signature for me. Thanks.

Been over clocking for a long time.

Hmm lets see an old favorite was my 386dx 25mhz running at 33mhz. After we added a cyrix math co. it was beast in 2d cad.

Another was a 486 dx 33mhz? which later became a 486 dx2 66 which later became a DX4 running at 133mhz.

Amd K6 III can't remember how fast it went maybe 500mhz

Amd athlon 1gighz with 2 gig ram was another favorite, was not over-clocked but, who needed to overclock when you were already running 1ghz?!

Amd Athlon 2500+ running at 2500mhz stable, water cooled.

On to my current Intel core 2 duo q6600 running at 3.2ghz is my current favorite.
Main machine: Core I7 -2600K @ 4.0Ghz / 16 gig ram / Radeon RX 580 8gb / 500gb toshiba ssd / 5tb hd
Old machine: Core 2 quad Q6600 @ 3ghz / 8 gig ram / Radeon 7870 / 240 gb PNY ssd / 1tb HD

I would have to choose my old Core 2 Duo E6750. The jump from a Pentium D 945 was amazing. This chip was super easy to overclock and I ran 3.6Ghz (up from 2.66) all day on air. This also helped me get over the 15k mark in 3dmark06.

I think my favorite is my first "real" CPU, a Socket A Athlon 1000, which I had overclocked to 1.4 GHz without any tricks (it ran pretty hot though). I had upgraded to that from a Pentium 200 non-MMX.

In second place would be a Core 2-based E4300 (?), which I ran overclocked STABLY from 1.8 GHz(?) stock to 4.0 GHz. FPS in BF2:BC would double with the overclock.

I still have both CPU's, and both work perfectly :)
