Any Bulldozer reviews using non-Windows OS?

Fri Oct 14, 2011 9:56 am

I was just reading this thread, where it was talked about how BD will do on Windows 8 versus Windows 7.
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=78267&start=30

It got me to thinking; are there any reviews of BD with the entire review is done on current non-windows OS?
Linux is the biggie I would want to see used, of course, but I know that other operating systems are out there.
Linux also would allow some gaming benchmarks too.
Just like to see how it does with non-MS OS.

Edit for grammar, spelling, stupidity, etc... :)

If someone will give me an AM3+ motherboard and Bulldozer CPU, I'd be willing to run some Linux benches...

Yeah, I would be very interested to see if they aren't just making excuses with that claim. I suppose if it can live up to its real potential in a Linux based machine then it could still do well in the server market.

Would running it in a VM be of any use? I could easily do that...

Not really. Performance wouldn't be the same as native.

Why not throw Ubuntu or somethin on a HD real quick?

All of these are using a preview version of Windows 8 (so results aren't final) but interesting nonetheless. It looks like there will be some gains, but nothing major. I saw another review that tested 4 games in Win7/Win8 also, which showed an average improvement of about 5%. I can't seem to find the link for that one at the moment though.

That might be interesting if the host is Xen, ESXi, or Hyper-V. Although, Xen and ESXi would be more helpful to me.

Here's a link to some results generated using the Phoronix test suite:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n ... &px=MTAwMT

The 8150 is compared against various Intel & AMD CPUs. This link compares the Bulldozer to a 2600K at stock speeds:
http://openbenchmarking.org/result/1110 ... 110131LI24

Interestingly, Bulldozer only really wins one benchmark outright, which is the Postgresql benchmark so maybe there is hope for Bulldozer as a server chip (although it lost to the 2600K at the Apache benchmark which is also a server benchmark).

Edit: There's another comparison where an i7 2820 mobile beats the Bulldozer system badly at Postgres:
http://openbenchmarking.org/result/1110 ... 110131LI64

The difference is in disks (the mobile has an SSD, the Bulldozer doesn't). Since a bunch of server-oriented tasks are
I/O limited, it's hard to accurately compare the CPUs unless both systems have reasonably similar storage infrastructures.

Yes, and SSDs in particular are a godsend to databases. The comparison presented, although entertaining, is very much invalid.
