I was pretty set on the Dell U2711 (up to and including using a Slickdeals coupon code for $250 off, and an employee discount for another $140), but it seems none of the reviews I saw addressed gaming well.

This monitor is primarily for games (or so I delude myself), but I'll do some work on it. I was also considering 3D capabilities, so I was wondering if there were any other suggestions in the 24"-27" range which have a good resolution and is good for gaming.

Just wanted to second this question. I'm curious about getting a 27" 2560x1440 monitor, but don't see lots of reviews around aside from the Dell ones... thoughts or suggestions?

The high end dell monitors are great for photography work with their AdobeRGB color-space, I have the u3011 myself. And it works fine for gaming, despite most reviews harpering on input lag, etc, which they do, compared to dedicated "gaming monitors". The pixel display rate is fine, even though a 120Hz monitor will be smoother for fast motions. The problem with pure gaming monitors is that they are usually anemic in many other areas, among those, especially color fidelity.

What it comes down to is what you must have in a monitor. For me it was ability to work at high res with great color. Gaming second, even though gaming takes a whole lot more when time is considered.

I wouldn't be worried about any of the Ultrasharp line as far as gaming goes. I know quite a few of people have them here, including myself. I've had 0 problems with my U2410.

I did, and I do like the u2711 quite a bit. I want the color fidelity, but I don't expect to be doing a lot of photo work.. again mostly I'm interested in what will make a game visually stunning, mostly RTS's and FP-RPG's (like Deus Ex or Fallout, probably Skyrim)

Can the Ultrasharp's do 3D? It sounds like the IPS panels are not fast enough, or am I misreading that?

Edit: Any thoughts on the Alienware OptX AW2310?

No 3D for the Ultrasharp line.

I don't know a whole ton about 3D monitors as I'm not interested in them, but this one seems to be getting a lot of attention.

From my understanding, any monitor that's IPS based doesn't have the pixel refresh rate to handle 3D.

I personally use the UltraSharp line for my personal computing/gaming (Dell 2408WFP and 2407WFP-HC). Both work great (I don't notice any input lag or "ghosting"). However, I don't think the monitors and their higher colour-fidelity/better viewing angles add anything to my gaming. However, the fact that there is far less colour shifting across viewing angles EXTREMELY helps using the desktop (i.e. email, web browsing, work, etc.). Mostly it comes from sequential table rows using different shading, and it all comes up as a single colour (even TR's forum topic do this on my TN panel at work vs. my panels at home).

Datapoint: I've been using a u2711 at home for over a year now, and I've never noticed any ghosting, even in fast-paced games. And like emorgoch, I find the lack of colour-shifting very nice.

U2410 owner here. It's fantastic for gaming, haven't had any problems at all.

I considered the U2711 but I pussied out and got the U2410 for half the price. I dunno, I just didn't feel comfortable spending over a grand on a monitor that can't do 3D. I'm hoping in 5 years or so 3D monitors will be available at the size and quality of the U2711, and then I'll spend with no limit.

I use an UltraSharp U3007WFP for most gaming. I can do 3D gaming on my Sony TV.

Once you've convinced the TV that you're watching 3D content (you may have to manually press the "3D" button on the remote to turn on the side-by-side or over-and-under half-resolution 3D modes), it automatically sends the signal to the Sony 3D glasses.

I'm afraid that I haven't found the 3D games, movies, sports events, etc. to be stunningly more immersive than flat 2D video.

I have a DoubleSight 27" IPS monitor 2560x1440, and the matte finish is IMHO better than the Dells I have seen. It is a much finer texture so you don't get the "matte grain" overlay. Still loving the monitor.

Ahh.. so your gaming rig is a laptop then? That'll make it easy to move around I'm not convinced for TV yet, but I've played around with some video games in a proper setup I was finding myself liking the 3D... I'm not 100% sold on it though, hence my confusion
