Battlefield 3 server

Mon Oct 24, 2011 7:34 pm

We've leased a 64-slot Battlefield 3 server to cater to the TR readership. I have provisionally named it Gerbilgeddon. It can be accessed here:

gerbilgeddon.clanservers.com

Your server admins are Dizik, tanker27, and Lucky Jack Aubrey. I think three admins would be good to start with, but we may consider adding one or two more on down the line.

We also have a Ventrilo voice comm server with 35 slots: vent30.gameservers.com:5026. To make sure that it is available for the TR "clan", the Ventrilo server has been password-protected. The password will be provided by TR private message only to one of the admins listed above.

For those who may wish to help out financially, information about how to contribute will be forthcoming.

Happy fragging!

Edit: Our clan tag will be "TR"

Edit2: Regarding Clanpay, the link is shown below. Unfortunately, it only allows a minimum pay amount of $5. Initially, any contributions will be credited toward month 2. Month 1 is on me (my small token of appreciation to the TR readership for the tech help provided over the years), and is already paid for.

I asked via PM, but I thought it would be good to have the information posted here publicly. Is the server private or public? I'm assuming it's public, because you didn't mention anything about a server password. I just wanted to make sure as it gave me pause when you listed the server's IP.

There are ways around the street date that have been reported. No telling if it'll result in the banhammer from EA/DICE.

FYI, our server isn't showing up within Battlelog yet. The following is displayed when I logged into GameServers.com:
There is a known issue that must be fixed by the back-end at Dice which is preventing a subset of our BF3 servers from showing up on Battlelog. Dice has been alerted of this issue and will be working to have every server show up properly. In the meantime, you will be able to configure your server as well as set up your server on GameTracker.com

Your server is affected by this issue if you are able to change your hostname but not see your server on Battlelog

A fix is expected for this roughly midnight 10/25/2011

Would be Glorious, as I had that as a previous EA account thingie, but they've thoroughly botched the migration.

Just put $33.05 into the war chest. Figured I'd pay for two seats for the year. Now all we need is a little love on the server and some people to actually show up and play in the evenings. BTW, my orgin id is TagMclaren.

Thanks to all who have helped out so far.

I do feel compelled to make a point: I intentionally rented this server on a month-to-month basis. There is no set time frame for how long we will keep it (beyond months one and two). It depends on the collective interest of TR readership. If gerbils keep supporting it financially, it will be up indefinitely. If interest wanes, the server will go away. Perhaps this is all self-evident, but when in doubt, spell it out.

All that said, I look forward to getting my ass handed to me this weekend by some gerbils with mad BF3 skillz.

Who are these people that you speak of? I played for a while last night with thill9 and njenabnit, and we were getting smoked. We still had fun, but it was amazing how much better other people are at a game that was launched just a few hours previously. Surprisingly, the highest ranked person I saw last night was level 10.

=Edit=
I just saw that LJA is from Dallas, myself and njenabnit are from the OKC area, and thill9's from Missouri. Methinks a TR Southwest BBQ/Get-together might happen in the near future.

origin id for me is seriousname

look forward to seeing you guys on there. the game is a blast so far! just wish that map times were longer for how long the load times are. its not too bad in rush, since switching sides and resetting the map is pretty fast. conquest is brutal though. 5 minute load times with 15 minute matches (for 64 person maps, at least)... ;(

I'm thinking we do something around the Formula 1 race in Austin, November 2012...hmmmm...

Where is our server hosted anyway?

Sold, BF 3 or not.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Chicago. Worked well, ping-wise, for most of our UT2004 players back in the day. However, I can have Gameservers.com move it to another city in something like an hour if it ever makes sense to do so.

Btw, it's a helluva thing when I keep getting booted out of our own server!

It says "Kicked by an administrator." Alright Dizik, tanker, who's the wise guy? (I know, it's a bug... or is it....)

EDIT: Bah - this morning I installed a mod at the behest of Gameservers that fixed the "kicked by administrator" bug, but I forgot to stop and restart the server. Went ahead and did that, and now the problem seems to have gone away.

Hmmm... just got a tip from the Gameservers forums that we might get a lot more traffic if I move the server to Dallas. I think I'll just do that right now - what's it gonna hurt?

I will probably mostly play with the ArsClan server that is located in NY area and nets me just over 100ms ping from overseas, but I would love to play with some TR-folks too. Looked at the latency a bit and chicago nets me 120ms and dalls 150ms, but the beta worked decently against Dallas, so BF3 doesnt seem to be that sensitive in ping at least.

Origin nick is Covenant-R (usually clantag Ars for when playing on the Ars server).
If anybody here on TR is in europe and play on PC, feel free to add me in Origin/battlelog.

Now only to pick up the game tomorrow evening so I can finally start playing. Stupid EA tiered release schedule and all.

Idiot mistake #1 - DON'T remove the only map from the maplist rotation. Add other maps FIRST! Otherwise, the server will immediately go down and not come back up (because it doesn't have a map to run). [forehead smack]

I configured the server to start with a minimum of 6 players, so that might make it easier for us to play instead of waiting for 8 people.

I've also added more maps to the playlist as well as added Rush. Right now, here's the map/gametype rotation:

  1. Demavand Peak - Rush - 32 players
  2. Grand Bazaar - Conquest - 64 players
  3. Tehran Highway - Conquest - 64 players
  4. Noshahar Canals - Rush - 32 players
  5. Kharg Island - Rush - 32 players
  6. Siene Crossing - Conquest - 64 players
  7. Operation Firestorm - Conquest - 64 players
  8. Operation Firestorm - Rush - 32 players
  9. Demavand Peak - Conquest - 64 players
  10. Siene Crossing - Rush - 32 players
  11. Noshahar Canals - Conquest - 64 players
  12. Kharg Island - Conquest - 64 players
  13. Grand Bazaar - Rush - 32 players
  14. Tehran Highway - Rush - 32 players
