Upgrading my Old Clunker

Thu Nov 03, 2011 10:27 pm

My PC has been through WWII and back with me so I guess it deserves an upgrade a much deserved rest.

Over the year a few good men were shot down so some parts have already been upgraded and will be carried over to the new system.

Parts that I will be reusing:
- Unknown brand steel casing (been with me 10 years and until i get enough to upgrade to the latest greatest aluminum Windy this is staying)
- PC P&C Silencer 750W
- MSI HD6950 2GB GPU
- Creative x-fi soundcard
- OCZ Vertex 3 120GB SSD
- WD Caviar Black 1TB HDD
- Dell 20" Ultrasharp monitor
- Logitech G5 mouse
- Das keyboard

Guess that leaves me with the crucial 3:
- CPU
- Motherboard
- Memory

Budget will probably be around $800 and main usage now will be internet surfing, some folding, some mining until DiabloIII comes out.

Ok, go!

CPU + mobo + memory won't hit $800 unless you're really trying.

I'd go 2600K, Gigabyte Z68XP-UD4, and 8-16 GB of any DDR3-1600 that catches your eye with 1.5v operating voltage.

Then use some of the leftover cash to get a halfway decent CPU cooler and OC the crap out of the 2600K. :)
Victory requires no explanation. Defeat allows none.

Yes, I was also considering something like that. With $800 I can get a high end CPU and mobo.
What is a good overclockers memory right now? HyperX?

Edit: What about the 2600 non-K version. Do I really need the faster onboard GPU when I have a discrete GPU?

The K version will provide for much easier and effective overclocking. Then again, if you don't plan to OC, by all means save 10-20 bucks and get the non-K version.

$219.99 Intel i5-2500K CPU
$139.99 ASUS P8Z68-V LE Motherboard
$46.99 Corsair Vengeance (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 RAM

Total = $406.97

If you're not doing professional work, the performance gains going from the i5-2500K to the i7-2600K aren't going to be substantial enough to warrant the extra $100. I'd save for a nice 27" H-IPS monitor from Dell or NEC. Or just save it.

I would say look at upgrading to a larger monitor (use 2!) to at least 1920x1080. Or you can just go straight to a 27"? ;)
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

I've got my old UltraSharp 2001FP in portrait mode (1200x1600) beside the 3007WFP (2560x1600). It looks like 3/4 of this.

I can agree with these. That leaves almost enough in the budget for an UltraSharp U2410 and a Blu-ray drive.

I would get a least 16GB of memory just because it's so cheap. I think November 14 2011 Intel will be releasing their new processors.

Rig 1:Processor: Intel Core I7-2600k if you don't plan to over clock Intel Core I7-2600
Motherboard: Gigabyte Ga-768P-DS3 LGA 1155 intel z768
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4*4GB) ddr3 1600 1.5 volts
Price about $527.30
Rig 2:Processor: :AMD Phenom II X6 1100T 3.3GHz,3.7GHz Turbo
Motherboard: Gigabyte Ga-970A-D3 AM3+
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4*4GB) ddr3 1600 1.5 volts
Price about $384.97
Rig 3:Processor: Intel Core i7 3930K 6 core 3.2GHz,3.8GHz Turbo memory support quad channel
Motherboard: Socket 2011 chipeset x79 with 8 memory slots
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 32GB (8*4GB) ddr3 1600 1.5 volts
Price ? $1073.00 release date 2011-11-14

I see lots of recommendations for Gigabyte mobos. I still remember during the P4 era there were some flaky Gigabytes not being able to support all 4 slots filled with memory. How has their recent record been?

I had two Gigabytes in the early 2000's that died, bad caps. AMD boards.

But everyone during that timeframe was apparently using cheap caps and everyone had that issue. I found out that this was "common knowledge" only AFTER trying to swap out several PSUs (which were also blowing out before the mobos finally died) and losing a few hard drives in the process.

I think the backlash was bad enough monetarily that mobo makers don't cheap out on the caps anymore and Gigabyte has a decent rep again so you're probably ok.

Also, if you have SATA and PCIe, your computer ain't THAT old. I figured you were finally upgrading that ol' Pentium 90 so you could use them newfangled interwebs!

The non-K i7-2600 also has VT-d, the K does not. So if you're really into VMs and junk, that might be a factor. Or maybe you meant the i5, I was skimmin'. I think the situation is the same for that, though.

Well it's not P1 old, I upgraded to a C2D around end 2006 but in PC years it is ancient.

If you fold much the 2600k would give a lot more points.

Gigabyte's "Ultra-Durable" line of motherboards use all solid-state (not liquid electrolyte) capacitors. My Gigabyte GA-X48-DS4 was the best motherboard that I've owned in a very long time. At the moment, Asus has better UEFI and fan controls, but I like the layout, features and pricing of a couple of Gigabyte's micro-ATX Z68 motherboards.

$122½ Gigabyte GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3
$127½ MSI Z68MA-G45 (B3)
$150 Gigabyte GA-Z68MX-UD2H-B3
$178 Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z
