"Picture Window View"

Wed May 11, 2011 3:37 pm

I've been considering a future upgrade to a U3011 monitor and in my reading I stumbled across the following from an article on wikipedia detailing a setup for a "picture window view" setup when flanked by two 20" 1600x1200 monitors:
wikipedia wrote:
One feature which is currently unique to the 30" WQXGA monitors are their ability to function as the centerpiece & main display of a three-monitor array of complementary aspect ratios, with two UXGA (1600×1200) 20" monitors turned vertically on either side. The resolutions are equal, and the size of the 1600 resolution edges (if the manufacturer is honest) is within a tenth of an inch(16" vs 15,89999"), presenting a "picture window view" without the extreme lateral dimensions, small central panel, asymmetry, resolution differences, or dimensional difference of other three-monitor combinations. The resulting 4960×1600 composite image has a 3.1:1 aspect ratio.
For the primary purposes of gaming and multimedia this setup seems like the most ideal and logical use for eyefinity.

My question is this: Which 20" UXGA monitors would be good to pair with a 30" IPS display and where could I buy them?

The UltraSharp 2001FP matched up well with my UltraSharp 3007WFP. There aren't as many 1600x1200 IPS LCD monitors as there once were.

I've propagated for that exact config for a long time, but sadly... its probably a lost cause at this stage. The hard part is getting a good 20" 1600x1200 monitor, they are getting few and far between. The second part is that for productivity its really golden. For gaming not so since eyefinity currently cant take different displays with different orientations in the same display group.

RIght now I run with a u3011 in Landscape mode my old 24" 1920x1200 monitor in portait mode to the right side. And the u3011 is by itself large enough for most gaming, and I love having 1920 on the height. In lightroom its decent enough to get a good large preview on the portrait photos, and when just surfing I have a chat window, and a movie going on the 24"'er while having up to 4 main windows on the primary.

PLP is the most sought after setup that is not developer supported. Nvidia, and AMD have confirmed as much and for some reason no go. The fact that 1600x1200 displays have become near extinct hasn't helped that any. the image qualtiy on old 2001 monitors isn't half bad though.

My desktop looks like 3/4 of this.

Some folks are making your desired 4960x1600 resolution work with some games, but they may be running windowed mode with a single GPU rather than full-screen with Crossfire support.
