TES V: Skyrim

Thu Nov 03, 2011 11:33 am

(I know there is another thread about the announcement - Mods merge if you feel the need - though we should have an official thread)

I have been freaking out a little about this game. I have plans to play most of the first weekend it's released.

I think I'm going to play Bosmer my first go-through. Sneaky sneak.

Does anyone else have a weird obsession with the idea that some NPC will randomly fall out of the sky a la Morrorwind?

I predict Skyrim will have the fastest growing mod scene from day one... ever!

I ENORMOUSLY appreciate games that let you customize the experience however you want... rather than force you to play the way the designers intended.

I just want texture mods early. That's all I really care about. Maybe a few UI things. I'll have to wait for gameplay to determine that.

Sadly there is no jump anything now. You can't increase your speed ( no attributes), there's no jump/levitate spell, and there is no acrobatics skill either.

Wait WHAT?! This better not be the beginning of the end . Why would they remove something like that?

Apparently levitate and jump are both gone because they made it too easy to escape messy situations (I'll just levitate away), and attributes as a whole are gone to streamline leveling up.

When you level up ( which is still done by increasing one of the 18 skills, down from Oblivions 21 and Morrowinds 27), you get to put a point(s?) into either health, magicka, or stamina (fatigue). You also can chose perks, some of which will be tied to skill levels, like in Fallout.

While I'm busting out the bad news, unlike in Morrowind or Oblivion, only "key" or "certain" (I forget the term) NPCs will have full blown conversation trees. The rest will just have generic replys of sorts. Fallout style enemy scaling as well, which is good and bad I guess.

Oh yeah, and the only ranged weapons in the game are bows.

I'm obessed with Morrowind and enjoyed Oblivion and the Fallouts. I am eagerly awaiting Skyrim, but I DONT WANT FALLOUT WITH SWORDS. I read an interview where they said they tried to recapture what made Morrowind magical, and I hope they succeeded despite the extreme streamlining. I remain doubtful however.

I get a kick out of this. All people kept saying about Fallout3 was "OMG JUST OBLIVION WITH GUNS!" but now Skyrim is just Fallout with swords? C'mon now. What do you REALLY WANT?

To me a lot of games are missing the point anymore. It feels like the graphics and engines are tuned to be beautiful and then other things like gameplay suffer. They remove or alter to the point of non-fun the elements we all loved from their previous incarnation. Look at DA2, awful.

I'm not going to let that keep me from playing the game but the point of TES was it's open-ended do-near-anything play style. If I want to fight the last boss 10 minute into the game, cool! Otherwise, I'll be on this mountain with my moon sugar and skooma pipe.

It still is like that. In fact, they've added to that in Skyrim.

To be honest, I want more Morrowind. :/

Probably why I'm currently about 57 hours into like my 5th playthrough.

I have an Asus RoG laptop. It's capable enough for games... as long as you don't stray away from an electrical outlet.

Half an hour ago, I pre-ordered. I don't think I've done that in years.

Already at 23% on Steam --I love my connection.

I'm thinking Dark Elf Battlemage, but I'm sure there's some other options. That was the favorite of the four characters I used in Oblivion, though.

EDIT: Holy cow, anyone read this yet?

I started to play Morrowind, I have to go back. I'd like to see Morrowind reborn with modern graphics, though.

After playing both Oblivion and Fallout3, I disagreed with the assessment of "Oblivion with guns". I bought Fallout 3 because of Oblivion, but that was because of the giant world to travel in. I treated my character in FO3 quite differently from mine in Oblivion.

My only wish now, in addition to hoping Skyrim is as good as I want it to be, is that it has the stability that Oblivion and Fallout 3 didn't. Even with an overkill system, I'd have both freeze for no good reason. It really bugged me in Fallout 3.

So I ordered the "guide" for Skyrim from Amazon and it arrived yesterday. The guide is a beast and the epitome of all guides. It weighs more than 3 pounds!

And the maps are detailed, very detailed.

If this is any indicator of how grand and grandiose Skyrim is the the naysayers have nothing to fear this will be the best TES ever!

I'm getting super antsy for the game. Can't wait till after work tomorrow! I have thought about going back and replaying Morrowind. I own it and never really played it for more than an hour or two. I did play Oblivion multiple times, but only actually completed the main quest like, 2-3 months ago on a speed run (not exactly, but I did it in 1 weekend).

Pre-ordered an XBox 360 version for my teenager, not sure whether I'll play that version or just go back and replay Morrowwind or Oblivion. My only experience with Steam was the Dragon Age II demo - the demo was unplayable (didn't bother figuring out why) and the Steam EULA was troubling (as are the horror stories I've read). Given that I've played this series from the start, I suspect that I'll eventually fold and try Steam again (but only when Skyrim is deeply discounted), but I am very disappointed with the Steam requirement. After all, it's a single player game and I'm a 50 y.o. with no interest in the Steam elements that are beneficial and enjoyed by many (e.g. multiplayer games, social networking elements, achievement tracking, etc.). It's just very disappointing after years of anticipation.

Obviously many of you are very happy with your Steam accounts, but remember, Steam offers nothing to me (and no, keeping a CD in the tray and the risk of misplacing a CD have never been a problem from my point of view). Perhaps some of you can educate me and give me some reassurance that I should just go ahead and install Steam? Also, is there any chance that a non-Steam version of Skyrim will ever be released (my strong suspicion is "not a chance")?

Wasn't that the mod compilation which caused a lot of butt-hurt for various retarded modders (something about "our mods were included with this compilation without our permission!!!1111oneoneone") and eventually caused the person who created this compilation to abandon it?

I hadn't heard this but the last time I checked it wasn't even out - I guess it is now albeit without the permission of some of the modders?

I, for one, have close to zero issues with Steam. I don't think I've ever had issues running a game from Steam. I don't know what about the EULA gives you trouble, but everyone has their gripes. There is close to 0 percent chance this game will eventually come out not requiring steam. There is always a chance, but probably not. As long as my internet connection is working fine I really don't ever have problems with Steam. I only have like 10 friends on there too so it's not like the social/achievements things are reasons why I play on there.
