Rage Freezing stuttering and crashing

Postposted on Fri Nov 11, 2011 11:47 pm

Here's my rig:

Core i5 2500k oc'd to 4.4ghz
8 gigs ram
2g HD 6950 Cat 11.10 release date 10/16
Device Manager Driver displays as version 8.901.2.0
Gaming at 1080p
Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit
The game will freeze hang and stutter as well as outright crash. This is the Steam version of Rage so it automatically includes the patch (doesn't it?). This happens with large and small textures enabled but happens more frequently with large.

Is there anything I can do to fix this that isn't too technical? IF there is a better AMD driver for Rage please post a link. I've tried 3 drivers.

Wait until next AMD will release Catalyst 11.11 which they claim will resolve Rage issues.

Unfortunately Catalyst 11.11 has older OpenGL driver. They are struggling to resolve all outstanding issues - memory leaks which leads to crashing (Catalyst 11.10 v3), texture flickering/corruption (Catalyst 11.10 v2). I use 11.10 v3 it crashes frequently during level loading but gameplay and visuals are very good. Try to use a custom config file that I posted in your other thread. Make sure that you set amount of ram of your card plus number of physical cpu cores that you have.

posting tweaks that work for me:

I'm using 8x CSAA w/ 2x supersample. The only downside is that the graphics might be too clean/smooth on this setting. However, this seems to be the best setting overall, and actually makes the game glitch less and run smoother.

Do not implement any strange config tweaks. Most are unnecessary and can easily make things worse. First set the graphics within the game's control panel. Second, do not force AF above 8, as that can cause artifacting. Third implement these tweaks in rageconfig.cfg:
seta com_allowconsole 1
seta com_skipIntroVideo "1"
seta image_lodbias -1
seta vt_lodBias -2
seta vt_minlod -1
seta vt_feedbackLodBias -1
//seta jobs_numthreads 4 //THIS YOU MAY WANT 4 ON
//seta vt_cudaBudget 16
//seta vt_maxPPF 64

The LOD tweaks are what actually fix the blurries, as the game is too aggressive with mip mapping. Do not change the FOV, as that will make pop-in/artifacting a lot worse. Also, do not mess with uncompressed textures unless you have lots of memory, as it will cause stuttering.

If you really want to mess with a million settings here's a good tweak site:

However, I don't recommend changing anything other than the lod settings I've mentioned above.
