CPU-Z "NB Frequency" Question

Tue Nov 15, 2011 7:05 pm

sorry if this is particularly dumb but I didn't get an answer over at the MSI forums...you guys never let me down (hope you appreciate the sucking up) :)

on an X58 platform, everything* default or Auto in the BIOS, shouldn't the NB Frequency be the product of DRAM clock x QPI?

I can't get the math to equal 2663.6 (what CPU-Z reports) unless I multiply using the RAM's default clock speed, which I'm not using. As you see I'm running the RAM at 533MHz.

Shouldn't I see 2130.8MHz (532.7 x 4) for the NB Frequency?

Everything but the RAM timings are Default or Auto in the BIOS - Memory Ratio=Auto, Uncore Ratio=Auto, QPI Frequency=Auto.

*X58 defaults to 533MHz but my RAM's default is 667MHz. It doesn't like to POST with 6 DIMMs @ 667 but it's fine at 533.

A couple screen shots should help...
Thank you All!

60 views no replies - I must be asking a really dumb question or a really hard one.

I've been all over google trying to figure it out for myself but I haven't yet. Any help - even to say "I have no idea" - would really be appreciated.

Thanks!

Now I'm back on a Q9400 however NB/QPI speeds are no longer directly related to ram speeds. This is because the memory controller has been moved on to the CPU. QPI is the pipe to the motherboard connecting to the northbridge which connects to the southbridge. The RAM itself is attached directly to the on die memory controller.

I downloaded a utility program called CPU-Tweaker. It's telling me it's the Uncore that's running at 2663.6, which makes sense if the UnCore multiplier is 20. I have it set to Auto so I thought it would fluctuate but it doesn't.

okay, guess that's my answer - the NB Frequency in CPU-Z is the Uncore Frequency.
