Oblivion crash to desktop time < 5 minutes

So I bought TES:Oblivion on sale for like $5 yesterday. Good deal! Downloaded and installed overnight, and I finally got time to play it tonight.

Pros: character face creator is awesome! I'm loving my Imperial with big eyes and shiny silver beard.

Cons: crash to desktop within seconds of finishing my character creation. I'm in the first room still! My rig: Xeon E3-1240, ASUS P8M mobo, ASUS 6950 1GB, Crucial 64 GB SSD, Xonar DS, Dell U2410.

Well, off to download the "Unofficial Patch" and "Unofficial Shivering Isles patch". We'll see if stability improves.

BTW, any recommendations on texture patches or other "must have" mods? I'm not super interested in adding content just yet, having never played the core game yet, but I love eye candy.

Humm i have Oblivion sitting in its box on my game shelf,bought it when it first came out years ago and never really played it.
Is it worth installing and playing it?
I too am very interested in mods/ texture packs available that are worth installing,I remember it having great graphics and really worked my x1800xts in crossfire with the old master card slave card setup and dongle along with a 4800x2 at around 3.2ghz.
That was my last gaming rig i sold long ago Before building this one in april.
