Recommendations... Using a Bravia 56" as a gaming screen

Postposted on Fri Dec 02, 2011 12:48 am

Hey all,

So I'm planning a new Sandy Bridge build (I'll probably get to it after the new year) that will very likely be hooked up to a 56" Bravia LED 3D TV. Besides multimedia, and home theater, the computer will be primarily for gaming. What sort of graphics configuration do you guys recommend to get the best performance on that TV? I'm not planning to go overboard in terms of budget (say somewhere around $1500 cap), and the kind of system I'm looking at now sits somewhere between the Sweeter Spot and Double Stuff builds. Dual graphics aren't out of the question, but again, I don't have an arm and a leg to spend.

What do you guys think?

Despite the large size of the monitor, as far as your graphics horsepower is concerned, it's the same as any other 1920x1080 monitor. Unless you plan on doing any 3D gaming, pretty much any upper-mid range card will do, depending on the games you play.

Basically the three questions you need to answer to let everyone here give much better recommendations are:
1 - Are you planning on doing any 3D gaming?
2 - What games are you playing?
3 - How cranky do you get when your fps falls below 60 on mega-ultra settings? (I have a few friends who get really frustrated when they're "only" getting 50 fps on uber-high settings.)

1. I don't really plan on doing any 3D gaming though I may try in the future. This really isn't a priority... though it may just be that I haven't been exposed enough to that style of gaming.

2. The games I play most are Battlefield (currently BF3) and the Mass Effect series (looking forward to ME3). Based on reviews, I may also look into Deus Ex and Skyrim.

3. To be perfectly honest, I don't really pay attention to frame rates per se. I want my games to run smoothly, and I do get annoyed when things get choppy or freeze and jump around. Like I said though, I don't actually keep an eye on the frame rate itself. In that respect, a bit of fluctuation doesn't bug me as long as things stay smooth.

Thanks

Pretty much any mid-high end GPU will be good. A 560 ti 448, 570, or 580 (if you want overkill) or a 6950/6970 would be gravy.
