Realtek RTL8188CE WiFi on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

Fri Dec 02, 2011 9:46 pm

Have a Lenovo X120e netbook here at work, and wanted to get Ubuntu 10.04 LTS working on it. This turned out to be somewhat less straightforward than I'd hoped, but I managed to get it going. The issue was the RTL8188CE WiFi chip, which apparently does not have out-of-box support in 10.04 LTS.

For anyone else who is trying to make a netbook/notebook with this WiFi chip work with Ubuntu LTS:

1) Go to this page, and download the "Linux driver for kernel 2.6.24 (and later)".

2) Unpack the tarball.

3) Make sure you have the build-essential package and headers for your kernel installed.

4) Follow the instructions in Section III of the readme file packaged with the driver.

By any chance did you try one of the linux-backports-modules-compat-wireless packages in the lucid-updates repository?

No, I did not. We do have another new-ish laptop with a Realtek WiFi chip that isn't recognized out-of-box. I will look into the backports driver situation when we set that one up (it currently has Win7 on it but the intent is to dual-boot).

Ok, Im running mint 12 but I can only get online hardline. I try load the kernels for my wireless in the terminal but I keep getting an error message. Any clue?
I'll have to repost the error message later.

I had this issue with my W520. I ended up getting the Intel replacement from IBM. Cost an arm and a leg, but it works with Linux.
