Some help selecting games for my mom

Postposted on Thu Dec 01, 2011 7:05 pm

Hi all,
My mom has ALS, and she is pretty much in the state of Steven Hawking where the only thing she can move is her eyes. She would like some new games for Christmas and I am a bit clueless on games that operate mouse-only, are stimulating, etc and don't require twitch or speedy motion to accomplish. Example: she plays a LOT of solitaire and she is very sick of it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Her computer is a Windows 98 box locked down so severely that Windows Explorer or Firefox will not run. That is a sore subject for another day that makes steam come out of my ears for how much those computers cost when the only IP is the simple camera plus software.

Thanks all!!!

The old Kings Quest series games might be useful. I'd suggest QUest for Glory, but the combat in those games requires reflexes (except in 1 as a wizard, but then that requires typing)

Syberia, Myst, things like that. The GOG version won't install on 98 though.

Turn-based strategy games? Civilization 2 will run on Win98. Maybe an old version of Battle for Wesnoth would as well.

Maybe she'd like a chess, checkers, mahjong, Go, etc. type of game.

There are a number of games based on Bejeweled. Look for the ones that favor un-timed play.

Faerie Solitaire is a good variation on Spider Solitaire.

I would stick with card games or board games. Hearts is fun, as well as Spades. Maybe some chess. I hate to say it, but Angry Birds is pretty fun too.

Take a look at the Humble Bundle offerings as well, they tend not to be twitch games.

The X-COM games have turn-based combat. Only the global view alien-interception part is slightly time-sensitive.

Thanks for the suggestions so far! Keep 'em coming. I just have to figure out how to get these things on her computer and perhaps run them from a USB stick. I am not certain HOW her machine is stopping web browsers from running as I can see no specific way it is locked down, but I am suspecting the custom software for her optical input is identifying some tasks and killing them. Probably going to stick Chrome on there and hope it doesn't see it. She would really like to be on Facebook and something like Gmail rather than the lousy built-in mail client.

What really irks me is this machine is sooooooo close to Apple's iOS (Tablet) or Android for user input. Instead this company opts for a custom solution that is very limiting and frustrating to use. They could easily take advantage of these social OSes for increased quality of life for people like my mom but instead opt for extremely basic operation and very limited usefulness. Worse is this machine is over 10K and the only special thing about it is the industrial case it is housed inside. Not only that it's battery life is terrible since the processor is from somewhere near 1995. I may give the company a few calls to see what they think of some upgrades to their system which would allow people like my mom to have a little more enjoyment in their lives with a decent modern machine. I will; even volunteer to put something together for them for nothing. Just have to port their optical system over to Android.

Betrayal at Krondor. Its a turn based RPG that really is like reading a book. Even the combat is turn based. And you can now get it for free.

I'd also vote for the Civ series. Another option may be something akin to the old Neverwinter Nights, but it lacks the turns that would likely make it work. However, it does have a pause button.

There is also a free web-based version of SimCity out there. On certain settings, it could work well.

Would console games work on the locked down system? I remember emulated 8-bit and 16-bit Nintendo games ran decently on Win98. I bet there are some games that work well with eye tracking input.

Chrome is not going to run on Win98, and you'll need an older version of Firefox if you want to try that, or there's Opera; not sure about its system requirements.

Besides the lockdown software, you're really going to be limited by your operating system and what it can run anymore.

Fallout 2. Turn based post-apocalyptic RPG. If she wants some post-apocalyptic rat killing :)

Arcanum. Turn based steampunk RPG - i.e. if she wants guns and magic.

Can get both off of GOG.com along with a lot of other good turn based games.

Building games like the Tycoon series or maybe the Sims series come to mind. Old school Simcity should run, and that was super good times, also largely mouse based.

Did you even read the OPs post? None of those games would work asides from minesweeper which would already be installed...
